European Teams at the 2026 WBC so far: Netherlands Deliver Drama, Italy Impress Early While Czechia and Great Britain Struggle

European hitters from the Netherlands, Italy, Great Britain and Czechia at the 2026 World Baseball Classic

The 2026 World Baseball Classic (WBC) is underway with pool play across Miami, Houston, San Juan and Tokyo, as 20 national teams compete for international baseball supremacy from March 4–17.

Among them, four European national teams — the Netherlands, Italy, Czechia and Great Britain — are representing the continent, each at a very different stage in their tournament campaign. Early results reveal a mix of elite competitiveness, breakout performances and difficult learning experiences against baseball powerhouses.

Below is a detailed breakdown of how each European nation has performed so far.

Netherlands (1–1): Albies’ Historic Walk-Off Sparks Dutch Campaign

The Kingdom of the Netherlands has delivered one of the most memorable moments of the tournament so far.

In their opener in Pool D at loanDepot Park in Miami, the Dutch fell 6–2 to Venezuela, a powerhouse lineup that capitalized on defensive miscues and timely hitting to take control of the game.

However, the Netherlands responded dramatically in their second game against Nicaragua.

Trailing 3–1 in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Dutch staged a late rally capped by Ozzie Albies’ three-run walk-off home run, securing a 4–3 victory. The blast was historically significant — the first walk-off home run in World Baseball Classic history.

Albies drove in all four Dutch runs and finished the game 2-for-4, delivering the signature European highlight of the tournament so far.

Current position:

  • Record: 1–1
  • Pool D standing: 3rd place
  • Remaining key matchup: Dominican Republic

With the Dominican Republic and Israel still ahead in pool play, the Netherlands remain firmly in contention for a quarterfinal berth.

Italy (1–0): Dominant Shutout Win Over Brazil

Italy opened its World Baseball Classic campaign with a convincing 8–0 shutout against Brazil in Pool B in Houston.

Left-handed pitcher Sam Aldegheri led the effort on the mound, while outfielder Dante Nori powered the offense with two home runs as Italy controlled the game from the start.

The Italian team also drew attention for its dugout culture — players celebrated the win by drinking espresso from a machine brought to the tournament, a tradition embraced by manager Francisco Cervelli.

Current position:

  • Record: 1–0
  • Pool B standing: tied for 3rd
  • Upcoming key games: Great Britain, USA, Mexico

Italy’s strong opening performance positions them as a legitimate contender to challenge the United States and Mexico in the pool.

Czechia (0–3): Tough Pool Against Elite Competition

The Czech national team faces one of the toughest pools in the tournament and remains winless after three games.

Their campaign began with an 11–4 loss to South Korea, followed by a 5–1 defeat against Australia. The most difficult result came against Chinese Taipei, which defeated Czechia 14–0 via the mercy rule.

The Czech roster — largely composed of players from domestic and European leagues — has struggled to match the pitching depth and offensive firepower of Asia’s baseball powers.

Current position:

  • Record: 0–3
  • Pool C standing: 5th place

Despite the record, participation alone remains significant for Czech baseball, which has rapidly grown since its surprising qualification for recent international tournaments.

Great Britain (0–2): Facing MLB Powerhouses Early

Great Britain has endured a difficult start in Pool B, opening against two of the tournament favorites.

The British squad first fell 8–2 to Mexico, which broke open a tied game late with power hitting and offensive depth.

Their second game brought an even bigger challenge: Team USA, which defeated Great Britain 9–1 behind a powerful offensive performance and strong pitching.

Current position:

  • Record: 0–2
  • Pool B standing: tied for last

Great Britain’s next matchup against Italy could prove decisive in determining whether they remain competitive in the pool standings.

European Outlook in the 2026 World Baseball Classic

Europe entered the tournament with four teams, but their trajectories vary widely:

  • Netherlands remains the continent’s strongest contender and continues its long tradition as Europe’s baseball powerhouse.
  • Italy has momentum after an impressive opening win.
  • Great Britain faces an uphill battle in one of the strongest pools.
  • Czechia continues gaining valuable experience against top international competition.

As pool play continues, the Netherlands and Italy appear to be Europe’s best chances to reach the knockout stage, with crucial games still ahead that could determine whether European baseball maintains a presence in the WBC quarterfinals.
