The semifinal Round Robin (Todos contra Todos) of the Liga Dominicana de Béisbol Profesional (LIDOM) is reaching a decisive stage, with major shifts in the standings and the first finalist officially confirmed in the 2025–26 season.
Toros del Este Break Tie and Strengthen Second Place
The Toros del Este delivered a statement victory by shutting out the Águilas Cibaeñas 3–0 at Estadio Cibao, breaking the tie for second place in the Round Robin standings.
Both teams entered the matchup tied at 8–6, but the win pushed the Toros to 9–6, giving them a one-game advantage with only three games remaining in the semifinal round. The result significantly strengthens La Romana’s chances of advancing to the championship series.
The game remained scoreless through six innings until the seventh, when starter Óscar de la Cruz allowed the first two Toros hitters to reach base. From there, the momentum shifted decisively. The loss came on a night when Águilas manager Luis Urueta was not with the club.
Starter Jaime Barría worked 4.2 innings for the Toros, allowing five hits, while reliever Emailin Montilla (2–0) earned the win. Joe Corbett closed the door in the ninth inning to secure his fifth save of the Round Robin. De la Cruz (2–1) took the loss after surrendering two runs in just over six innings.
Offensively, Eric Filia sparked the decisive rally with a walk, followed by a hit-by-pitch to Yairo Muñoz. Jeimer Candelario capitalized with a two-run double to right field. A sacrifice bunt by Onix Vega and a sacrifice fly from Sergio Alcántara completed the scoring for the Toros.
Leones del Escogido Secure Their 30th Finals Appearance
Meanwhile, in San Francisco de Macorís, the Leones del Escogido officially clinched a spot in the LIDOM final with a 5–1 win over the Gigantes del Cibao at Estadio Julián Javier.
With the victory on Round Robin Day 15, the defending Dominican and Caribbean champions punched their ticket to the 30th finals appearance in franchise history, reaffirming their status as one of the most successful organizations in league history.
Escogido continues its pursuit of a rare back-to-back championship, something the club last achieved in the 2011–12 and 2012–13 seasons. The most recent LIDOM team to repeat as champions were the Tigres del Licey, who accomplished the feat in 2022–23 and 2023–24.
Historically, the Leones were also the first franchise to capture a tricampeonato in LIDOM, winning titles in 1954–55, 1955–56, and 1956–57. The Águilas Cibaeñas, for their part, have recorded four two-peat championships and one triple crown since the early years of Dominican professional baseball.
Current LIDOM Playoffs Outlook
With the Gigantes already eliminated, the remaining battle for the final spot centers on Toros del Este and Águilas Cibaeñas, while Leones del Escogido await their opponent in the championship series. Every remaining game carries postseason implications as the Round Robin reaches its final stretch.
The LIDOM playoffs continue to deliver high-intensity baseball, historic rivalries, and championship drama, once again showcasing why Dominican winter ball remains among the most competitive leagues in the world. ⚾
