The new DBL season is in full swing. The teams of the Deutsche Baseball Liga kicked off the new season on the weekend of April 10th to 12th.
1st Week of Games
In the matchups Regensburg vs. Gauting, Bonn vs. Hünstetten, and Hamburg vs. Dortmund, the favorites lived up to their roles. In addition, the Mainz Athletics secured their first two home wins in the doubleheader against the München-Haar Disciples, while Stuttgart surprised reigning champions Heidenheim in Game 1 and managed to secure a split. The Paderborn Untouchables and the Cologne Cardinals also split their series fairly.
2nd Week of Games
And there was plenty of action again this weekend in Germany’s top league: On Friday evening, the Regensburg Legionäre faced the Mainz Athletics in the top game. At the same time, the Stuttgart Reds hosted the Gauting Indians. The game between Regensburg and Mainz ended 8-1 in favor of the Legionäre, while the Reds clinched their first home win of the season against the Munich suburbanites.
First win of the season for Gauting
Baseball Saturday was also packed with excitement: The Stuttgart Reds again started things off, challenging the Indians in Game 2. After an early exchange of hits, the game became very defense-oriented, which Gauting ultimately won 6-5. Tobias Maul (CF, Gauting) stood out offensively with an outstanding performance: He gave the Indians an early 4-0 lead in the first inning with a grand-slam home run. In the 7th inning, he followed up with an RBI double that brought home the decisive 6th run for the Indians.
DBL Classic on the Rhine
In the Rhine derby, the Bonn Capitals won Game 1 on the road against the Cologne Cardinals 8-4: In the bottom of the 3rd inning, the Cardinals took the lead through an RBI single by Simon Keimes, but the Capitals’ response didn’t take long. Simon Bäumer and Daniel Lamb-Hunt gave the Capitals their first lead with a 2-run home run each. And they didn’t let go of it that afternoon. Instead, they extended it to 7-1 in the 7th inning through RBI singles from Bäumer, Lamb-Hunt, and Pearce, and added another run in the following inning. The Cardinals closed the gap to four runs in the bottom of the 8th and 9th innings with an RBI walk and a 2-run home run by Moritz Jödicke, but despite having the tying run at the plate, they couldn’t turn the game around.
Hünstetten surprises Hamburg
The big upset of the day came from Hünstetten Storm, who claimed a clear first home win against favorites Hamburg. The season opener a week earlier couldn’t have gone more differently for the two opponents. All the more unexpected was this 14-4 win for the Storm. But at the start of the game, things looked anything but good for the hosts: After the 1st half-inning, they were already trailing 0-4. They only got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the 3rd inning through a 3-run home run by Zach Johnson. Two innings later, another 3-run home run gave Hünstetten a 6-4 lead, this time hit by new signing Wester Bocio. In the 7th inning, the Storm offense was unstoppable: Hits by Agustin Tissera, Zach Johnson, Tobias Glimmerud, Douglas Jochum, and Wester Bocio ended the game early.
Strong defensive game from Regensburg / Promoted team gains hope
The remaining three games of the day all ended with unexpectedly close results. Regensburg’s defense shone in the 3-0 home win in Game 2 against the Mainz Athletics, keeping a clean sheet. In the duel between Haar and Heidenheim, the final score was 2-6 from the hosts’ perspective, meaning they had to accept their third straight loss at their home opener. The home opener for promoted Dortmund also didn’t go entirely according to plan: They had to concede a 1-3 loss to favorites Paderborn after a hard-fought game. Despite the defeat, the Dortmund Wanderers will take some hope from this courageous performance, which may have faded a bit in some places after the sobering DBL premiere in Hamburg.
DBL Sunday closes out the weekend
The second game day ended with the four remaining return games on Sunday afternoon. The Heidenheim Heideköpfe also won Game 2 at the Disciples, 13-4. The Hamburg Stealers got their revenge against Hünstetten in a tight second game (7-5 win for the Stealers). The Bonn Capitals also won the return game 6-4, although the Cardinals made life difficult for them at Dedeke Field in Bonn’s Rheinaue. In the evening game of DBL Sunday, the Untouchables Paderborn gave the Dortmund Wanderers no chance and won 11-0 in front of their home crowd.
These results mean the following for the standings:
In the North, the Bonn Capitals sit in first place as the only undefeated team, followed by the Hamburg Stealers and the Untouchables Paderborn (both 3 wins, 1 loss). Hünstetten and Köln share 4th place with one win each, and in 6th place are the Dortmund Wanderers, who are still waiting for their first DBL win.
In the South, the Guggenberger Legionäre lead the table undefeated, closely followed by Heidenheim. Stuttgart and Mainz both have even win-loss records, Gauting sits in 5th with one recorded win, and at the bottom of the South are the Haar Disciples, who couldn’t win a game this weekend either.
Conclusion:
In summary, we can look forward to an exciting DBL 2026 season, especially since there are some extremely interesting matchups coming up next weekend. Baseball fans in Germany are eagerly anticipating the rematch of last year’s final pairing. The Heidenheim Heideköpfe will visit South division leaders Regensburg. Other important games include the North classic Bonn vs. Paderborn, the North underdogs clash Dortmund vs. Hünstetten, and the South contenders duel between Gauting and Mainz.
