HCAW Exposes Oosterhout Twins’ Early-Season Weaknesses in Dominant Weekend Series Victory

HCAW pitcher delivers a throw during an evening game against the Oosterhout Twins in the Dutch Honkbal Hoofdklasse

The opening marquee matchup of the 2026 Honkbal Hoofdklasse season quickly turned into a dissapointing weekend for the Oosterhout Twins. In a series that was expected to test two playoff-caliber clubs, HCAW instead exposed nearly every early weakness in the Twins roster, overpowering their lineup, capitalizing on pitching mistakes, and controlling the tempo of all three games.

Across the first two losses of the weekend, the Twins managed almost no sustained offensive pressure while HCAW’s pitching staff delivered one dominant outing after another. The contrast between both clubs was sharp: HCAW looked polished, aggressive, and efficient, while Oosterhout struggled to generate momentum inning after inning.

HCAW Punishes Early Mistakes in Bussum

The tone of the weekend was established immediately on Thursday night in Bussum.

Oosterhout actually created the first scoring opportunity of the game when Railison Bentura doubled with two outs in the opening inning. A wild pitch moved him to third base, briefly putting pressure on HCAW starter Kimi Verkruijssen. But the Twins once again failed to produce a timely hit, leaving Bentura stranded ninety feet away.

That missed opportunity immediately became costly.

In the bottom half, HCAW erupted for four runs on three hits against starter Jurgen Zwitzer. Singles from Miquel Willem and Terrance Heemskerk surrounded a hit-by-pitch to Jeldwin Orman before Zwitzer completely lost command with the bases loaded. Consecutive walks to Mees Robberse and Sebastian Perez forced in two runs, while Jesse Aussems followed with an RBI single. Sheadion Louisa added another run with a productive ground ball to make it 4-0 before the Twins could settle into the game.

The early deficit effectively ended the contest.

HCAW added further pressure in the second inning when Mees Robberse delivered an RBI double to extend the lead to 6-0. From there, Verkruijssen completely controlled the game. The young right-hander delivered six shutout innings, allowing only three hits while striking out nine Twins hitters. Oosterhout rarely squared him up consistently, and their inability to adjust to his fastball-command combination became a recurring theme throughout the weekend.

For a Twins offense expected to be among the stronger units in the league entering the season, the lack of quality at-bats stood out more than the final score itself.

Kaj Timmermans Silences Twins Again

The offensive problems only intensified in the second game of the series.

HCAW starter Kaj Timmermans authored a complete-game shutout and never allowed the Twins lineup to establish rhythm. Oosterhout failed to score in a 5-0 defeat, continuing a troubling trend of weak contact and limited situational hitting.

The game started disastrously for the home side.

On the very first pitch of the afternoon, Miquel Willem launched a leadoff home run, immediately handing HCAW another early advantage. Moments later, Jeldwin Orman doubled and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Mees Robberse to make it 2-0 before the Twins recorded any offensive response of their own.

The remainder of the game belonged entirely to Timmermans.

The HCAW right-hander attacked the strike zone aggressively, worked deep into counts when necessary, and consistently forced weak contact. The Twins struggled to elevate baseballs with authority and once again failed to string together productive innings against elite pitching.

HCAW broke the game open in the seventh inning when consecutive hits by Sebastian Perez, Jeldwin Orman, and Terrance Heemskerk produced three additional runs. By then, the game already felt out of reach.

Through the first two games of the series, Oosterhout’s offense produced zero runs while striking out repeatedly against HCAW’s starting pitching. Even more concerning was the lack of pressure they created on the bases. The Twins rarely advanced runners into scoring position and failed to capitalize whenever small opportunities emerged.

Miquel Willem Emerges as HCAW’s Offensive Catalyst

One of the defining developments of the series was the emergence of Miquel Willem as the offensive spark for HCAW.

Willem repeatedly set the tone at the top of the lineup, reaching base early and forcing the Twins to play from behind almost immediately in every game. His leadoff home run in Game 2 completely shifted momentum before Oosterhout had even recorded an out.

Later in the weekend finale, Willem again opened the scoring with a double before eventually crossing home plate on an RBI single from Terrance Heemskerk.

HCAW’s lineup consistently applied pressure through disciplined at-bats and aggressive baserunning. Players like Jeldwin Orman, Sebastian Perez, and Mees Robberse repeatedly delivered situational hits that extended innings and punished defensive mistakes.

The Twins, meanwhile, lacked that same offensive fluidity for most of the series.

Twins Finally Respond Behind Nando Mostaert

After nearly two full games without scoring, Oosterhout finally showed signs of life in the final matchup of the weekend.

Following another early HCAW run, the Twins responded immediately. Faas Sluijter reached base on a defensive error before Railison Bentura delivered an RBI double to tie the game. Terrence Garcia followed with a sacrifice fly that gave Oosterhout its first lead of the entire series.

The biggest offensive swing came from Nando Mostaert, whose second home run of the season pushed the advantage to 3-1. Mostaert later scored again after reaching on an error, advancing on a Luuk Bun double, and crossing home plate on an RBI single by Daan Verpaalen.

That offensive support proved enough for Ayumu Ishikawa.

The former NPB All-Star delivered eight strong innings and stabilized a pitching staff that had been under heavy pressure throughout the series. Stijn van der Schaaf closed the game to secure the save as the Twins avoided a complete sweep with a 4-2 victory.

Early Concerns Growing for Oosterhout Twins

Despite salvaging the final game, the overall series raised significant concerns for Oosterhout moving forward.

The Twins were outscored 11-4 across the weekend and looked vulnerable against high-level pitching. Their inability to manufacture offense without extra-base hits became particularly noticeable, while the starting rotation struggled with command during critical innings.

Defensively, the club also committed mistakes that extended innings and allowed HCAW to maintain offensive pressure. Against disciplined opponents like HCAW, those extra opportunities quickly became damaging.

Most importantly, the series highlighted the gap in consistency between both clubs early in the season.

HCAW executed clean baseball in nearly every phase: starting pitching, situational hitting, bullpen stability, and defensive discipline. Oosterhout, by contrast, looked like a team still searching for offensive identity and rhythm.

For a club with postseason ambitions, the Twins now face an important early-season question: can the lineup quickly adjust against top-tier pitching, or will offensive inconsistency become the defining storyline of their 2026 campaign?
