MLB news
More MLB newsMLB at a glance
MLB has 30 clubs in two leagues of 15, the American League (AL) and the National League (NL). Each league has an East, Central and West division of five teams. Every club plays a 162-game regular season, which ran from March 25 to September 27 in 2026, before the 12-team postseason decides the World Series champion.
How the MLB postseason works
Six teams from each league reach the postseason: the three division winners and three Wild Card teams, the clubs with the best records among the rest. The two best division winners in each league get a bye. The other four play a best-of-three Wild Card Series, followed by the best-of-five Division Series, the best-of-seven League Championship Series and, finally, the best-of-seven World Series between the AL and NL champions.
