ABL news
More ABL newsSummer baseball in Australia
The ABL runs from November to January, when the northern-hemisphere leagues are on their winter break. That makes it a popular destination for MLB prospects who need extra at-bats or innings, alongside the best Australian players and members of the national team.
How the ABL season works
The 2026-27 season has 4 clubs: Adelaide Giants, Brisbane Bandits, Perth Heat, Sydney Blue Sox. Each team plays 39 regular-season games, mostly in four-game series from November 19 to January 24. The top two teams in the table meet in the ABL Championship Series, a best-of-three final, for the Claxton Shield.
A league in transition
The Melbourne Aces and Canberra Cavalry left the league after financial problems, so the ABL now plays with four teams under a new, centrally run model led by Baseball Australia. The league aims to return to six clubs by the 2027-28 season.
