Korean baseball, explained
Founded in 1982, the KBO League is one of the most popular sports leagues in Asia, known for loud cheer squads, bat flips and big crowds. It has become a stepping stone to MLB for players such as Hyun-jin Ryu, Ha-seong Kim and Jung-hoo Lee, while former MLB players and prospects often find a second career in Korea.
How the KBO season works
All 10 teams play in one table. Each club plays 144 regular-season games, which ran from March 28 to October 12 in 2026. Games can end in a draw after extra innings, so the standings show draws (D) as well as wins and losses.
How many teams make the KBO playoffs?
Five. The fourth- and fifth-placed teams meet in the Wild Card round, where the fourth-placed team only needs one win. The winner plays the third-placed team in the semi-playoff, then the second-placed team in the playoff. The regular-season champion waits in the best-of-seven Korean Series.
