Kinheim delivered a major upset on the opening night of the 2026 Lucky Day Honkbal Hoofdklasse playoffs, defeating regular-season powerhouse Curaçao Neptunus 7-2 in Rotterdam. Neptunus entered the postseason with a dominant 33-3 record, but fourth-seeded Kinheim immediately turned the semifinal series upside down with a convincing road victory. In the other best-of-five semifinal, Amsterdam Pirates defeated Oosterhout Twins 8-1 behind six RBIs from Victor Draijer.
The semifinal round is the first stage of the Hoofdklasse playoffs and features four teams competing in two best-of-five series. Three victories are required to advance to the Holland Series.
Neptunus entered the postseason as the clear top seed after finishing 33-3, while Amsterdam Pirates finished second at 30-6. Oosterhout Twins ended the regular season at 19-17 and Kinheim entered as the fourth seed at 18-17.
On opening night, however, the biggest story belonged to Kinheim.
Kinheim shocks Neptunus with 7-2 road win
Few results could have made a bigger immediate impact on the playoff picture.
Curaçao Neptunus had lost only three games during the entire regular season, but Kinheim matched the Rotterdam club early and then broke the game open in the middle innings to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five semifinal.
Kinheim wasted little time showing it was prepared to challenge the top seed.
Jair van Borkulo was hit by a pitch with one out in the top of the first before Jayden Mohamed doubled to deep center field, bringing Van Borkulo home for an immediate 1-0 lead.
Neptunus responded in the bottom half. Marnix Ruben tripled to right-center and Stijn van der Meer followed with a sacrifice fly to center field, tying the game at 1-1.
For a team that had dominated the Dutch regular season, that appeared to restore order.
Kinheim had other plans.
Hofer helps Kinheim move ahead
Nick Hofer emerged as one of the key offensive players of Game 1.
After doubling in the third inning without scoring, Hofer opened the fifth with another double, this time down the left-field line. Raydley Legito advanced him to third with a sacrifice bunt before Luca van Gorkum drove him home with a sacrifice fly.
Kinheim had regained the lead at 2-1.
The fourth seed then produced the game's first major offensive breakthrough in the sixth.
Aidan Finnegan drew a walk and Jesse Velders was hit by a pitch. Jayvon Vicario subsequently reached on a fielder's choice before Hofer singled into right-center field.
Finnegan and Velders both scored.
Kinheim suddenly held a 4-1 advantage over a Neptunus team that had surrendered remarkably few losses all season.
Three-run seventh puts Neptunus in serious trouble
Kinheim did not simply protect the lead. It attacked again in the seventh inning.
Van Gorkum opened the frame with a single to first base and Van Borkulo followed with a double to center field. Neptunus intentionally walked Mohamed, loading the bases and creating a critical situation.
Max Draijer reached on a fielder's choice, with Van Gorkum scoring following a throwing error.
Finnegan then singled through the left side to bring Van Borkulo home, before Vicario added a sacrifice fly that scored Draijer.
The three-run inning extended Kinheim's lead to 7-1.
What began as a potential upset had turned into a commanding performance.
Rizvić shuts down Neptunus lineup
Kinheim's offense provided the runs, but its pitching performance was equally important.
Winning pitcher Rizvić kept the Neptunus lineup to only one run through seven innings, preventing the regular-season champions from putting together the type of sustained rally that defined so much of their 33-win campaign.
Neptunus did create opportunities.
The Rotterdam club stranded three runners in the fifth and again loaded the bases in the seventh, but failed to score in either inning.
Those missed chances became increasingly costly as Kinheim continued adding runs.
Neptunus finally scored again in the bottom of the ninth. Arthur Bonevacia singled, Stijn van der Meer was hit by a pitch and Bonevacia eventually crossed the plate on a balk.
It only reduced the deficit to 7-2.
Dwayne Kemp struck out swinging for the final out, completing one of the biggest results of the 2026 Hoofdklasse season.

Why Kinheim's win is such a significant upset
The importance of the result goes beyond simply taking Game 1.
Neptunus entered the playoffs after compiling a 33-3 regular-season record, a winning percentage of .917. Kinheim, meanwhile, qualified as the fourth seed after finishing 18-17.
That represents a regular-season difference of 14.5 games between the clubs.
On paper, Neptunus entered the semifinal as a substantial favorite.
Kinheim not only beat the top seed but did so on the road and by five runs, while holding Neptunus to two runs across nine innings.
In a best-of-five series, one upset does not decide the matchup. It does, however, immediately alter its dynamics.
Kinheim has already taken a road game from a team that lost just three times over the entire regular season. Neptunus now needs to win three of the remaining four games to avoid elimination.
For Kinheim, the task has effectively become a best-of-four series in which it needs only two victories.
Amsterdam Pirates beat Twins 8-1 behind Draijer's six RBIs
While Kinheim produced the shock of opening night, Amsterdam Pirates started their own postseason in convincing fashion with an 8-1 victory over Oosterhout Twins.
The game remained relatively close until a five-run seventh inning, highlighted by a Victor Draijer grand slam, put the result beyond doubt.
Twins actually opened the scoring.
Railison Bentura singled to left field in the second inning and Axel Poesmans was hit by a pitch. Luuk Bun advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt before Terrence Garcia grounded out, allowing Bentura to score for a 1-0 lead.
Pirates answered immediately.
Delano Selassa singled in the bottom of the second and Draijer doubled to deep center field, bringing Selassa home and tying the game.
Amsterdam took control in the third.
Jeandro Tromp walked, Alex Madera singled and Tommy van de Sanden walked to load the bases. Selassa then drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 2-1.
Draijer followed with a groundout that scored Madera, extending the advantage to 3-1.

The decisive inning arrived in the seventh.
Julian Goins was hit by a pitch and Tromp walked. After Madera was retired on a bunt attempt, Van de Sanden singled to left field to load the bases.
Selassa then brought home Goins on a play recorded as a sacrifice fly and error, making it 4-1.
Draijer followed with the biggest swing of the game.
The Amsterdam hitter launched a grand slam to deep left field, scoring Tromp, Van de Sanden and Selassa ahead of him.
Pirates' lead jumped from three runs to seven.
Draijer finished 2-for-4 with a double, home run and six RBIs, personally accounting for three-quarters of Amsterdam's scoring.
Winning pitcher Lars Huijer held Twins to one run through five innings before the Pirates bullpen completed four scoreless frames.
Nelmerson Angela took the loss for Oosterhout.

The much bigger development, however, is in the other series.
Kinheim leads Curaçao Neptunus 1-0 after beating the 33-3 regular-season champion 7-2 in Rotterdam.
For Neptunus, Game 2 has already taken on added importance. Another Kinheim victory would leave the top seed facing elimination and needing to win three consecutive games to reach the Holland Series.
For Kinheim, the opening game provided evidence that the regular-season standings may mean very little once a short playoff series begins.
