A day after acquiring Juan Mora from Venados de Mazatlán, Algodoneros de Guasave got an immediate return on their new infielder. Mora collected two hits and scored twice in his debut on Sunday, October 25, helping Guasave beat Tomateros de Culiacán 4-2 and reclaim a share of first place in the 2026-27 Liga Mexicana del Pacífico.

The victory clinched the road series for Algodoneros and lifted them to 8-3, level with Naranjeros de Hermosillo at the top of the early-season standings. It was Guasave’s sixth road win.

Guasave acquired Mora in a season-long loan exchange that sent fellow infielder Orlando Piña to Mazatlán. The 2026-27 move paid off almost immediately: batting second and playing second base, Mora went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.

He doubled in the first inning and came home on an infield single by Jesús Castillo to give Guasave the lead. Culiacán answered with Luis Roberto Verdugo’s solo homer in the bottom half, then moved ahead 2-1 in the second on an RBI single from Édgar Robles.

Guasave turned the game in the third. Consecutive singles by Drew Avans, Mora and Víctor Labrada tied the score, with Labrada bringing home Avans. Mora then scored the go-ahead run when Albert Lara grounded into a double play.

Six relievers protect the lead

Starter Saúl Vázquez allowed two runs on four hits over five innings, walking three and striking out three to earn his first win of the season. Six Guasave relievers combined for four scoreless innings, and Nate Antone finished the ninth for his first save.

Algodoneros added an insurance run in the ninth after a grounder by pinch-hitter Kristian Delgado forced a Culiacán error, allowing Yael Romero to score. Tomateros starter Norge Ruiz took the loss after giving up three runs in six innings.

The series win gives Guasave momentum heading into its next home set against Mayos de Navojoa, beginning Tuesday. Culiacán fell to 6-5 and will visit Yaquis de Obregón.
