Palestine Baseball Completes Historic Asian Games Debut
Palestine completed its first Asian Games baseball campaign in Japan, closing a historic three-game run that players said transcended the results.

Palestine completed its first Asian Games baseball campaign on Wednesday, September 23, with a 9-1 loss to China in Aichi-Nagoya, closing a landmark week for a national program that began less than a decade ago.
The three defeats in Group A showed the distance that remains between Palestine and Asia’s established baseball nations. They also placed the team on its biggest stage yet, opposite the Philippines, China and world No. 1 Japan.
A milestone bigger than the results
Palestine opened the tournament with a 12-0 loss to the Philippines before facing Japan under the lights at Toyohashi Municipal Baseball Stadium. The host nation won 15-0 in five innings, but players described the chance to compete in that environment as a measure of how far Palestinian baseball has come.
The campaign ended against China. Yunis Halim drove in Palestine’s lone run in the 9-1 defeat, giving the team its first run of the Games.
Luke Shahin, one of several players who reached the national team through college baseball in North America, told Arab News that wearing the Palestine jersey carried a meaning beyond the scoreboard. “It’s way bigger than just a ballgame,” he said.
Shahin said players arrived from different cities and programs but quickly formed a close group around their shared roots. Tariq Suboh, who played college and independent professional baseball in the United States, called representing Palestine a dream and an honor. Nineteen-year-old Yacoub Rayan pointed to the team’s Asian Games appearance as evidence of the program’s resilience and rapid development.
From Gaza grassroots to the Asian Games
Palestine’s baseball movement began as a grassroots initiative in Gaza in 2017. The national setup later expanded to include Palestinian players based abroad, creating a roster with experience from several levels of North American baseball.
Competitive progress followed. Palestine finished second at the 2023 West Asia Cup, then beat Pakistan 5-4 in extra innings to win the 2025 edition. The team also placed fifth at the 2025 Asian Baseball Championship.
Aichi-Nagoya represented another step. Baseball was the only team sport in which Palestine competed at the 2026 Asian Games, and the roster became the country’s first to take part in the event.
Japan offers a glimpse of the next level
The game against Japan provided the clearest look at the standard Palestine is trying to reach. Players highlighted the hosts’ discipline, execution and baseball culture, as well as the respect shown by the crowd despite the one-sided score.
Palestine left Japan without a win, but its presence alongside the continent’s leading programs was itself a significant development. The next challenge is to turn the experience into a stronger international schedule, deeper player development and more competitive results.
For a program launched in 2017, reaching the Asian Games in 2026 was not the finish line. It was proof that Palestine baseball now has a place on the continental stage.
