Spain qualified for the WBSC Premier12 for the first time in program history by beating Italy 5-2 on Saturday night, October 10, at Camp Municipal de Beisbol Carlos Pérez de Rozas in Barcelona.

The host nation improved to 2-0 in the four-team qualifier and secured one of the group’s two places in the expanded 16-team tournament in 2027. Spain’s final game against eliminated Colombia can no longer affect its qualification.

Spain completes a historic two-game breakthrough

Spain entered the Barcelona qualifier ranked No. 26 in the world and chasing a first appearance in the WBSC’s flagship men’s national-team event. It opened the tournament by erasing a 2-0 deficit to beat Germany 3-2 in 10 innings, then followed that comeback with a three-run victory over world No. 14 Italy.

Right-hander José Gómez started for Spain against an Italian lineup that had rallied past Colombia 4-3 in its opening game. Mattia Aldegheri started for Italy.

The result leaves Spain alone at 2-0 and guarantees a top-two finish before Sunday’s final round of games. It is the first time Spain has qualified for the Premier12, which will expand from 12 to 16 teams for its fourth edition.

Italy and Germany face a winner-take-all game

Italy and Germany are both 1-1 and meet Sunday at noon local time with the second Barcelona ticket at stake. The equation is direct: the winner advances to the 2027 Premier12 alongside Spain.

Germany stayed alive earlier Saturday with a 6-1 victory over Colombia, powered by Christian Pedrol’s two-hit complete game and Billy Germaine’s five RBIs. Colombia fell to 0-2 and was eliminated.

The 2027 Premier12 will also influence Olympic qualification for Los Angeles 2028. The highest-finishing eligible team from Europe or Oceania will earn one of baseball’s six Olympic berths, giving Spain’s breakthrough significance beyond the qualifier itself.
