New York Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor has won Major League Baseball’s 2026 Roberto Clemente Award, recognizing his work in education, youth development and community relief. The Puerto Rico-born five-time All-Star will be honored before Game 3 of the World Series on Monday, October 26, after earning the Mets’ nomination in each of the past four seasons.

The award is among MLB’s highest individual honors, but unlike a batting title or Gold Glove, it recognizes what a player contributes beyond the field. For Lindor, whose philanthropic efforts span New York, Florida and Puerto Rico, the recognition brings together causes he has supported for years.

Four nominations lead to Lindor’s first Clemente Award

Lindor had been the Mets’ nominee every year since 2023. His selection makes him the first Mets player to receive the league-wide honor since Curtis Granderson in 2016 and the fifth winner in franchise history.

He will receive the award ahead of Monday’s World Series game between the Milwaukee Brewers and Tampa Bay Rays. The award is named for Roberto Clemente, the Hall of Fame outfielder and fellow Puerto Rican who died in 1972 while delivering earthquake-relief supplies to Nicaragua.

Education and community support at the center of his work

Lindor has donated more than $1 million to Montverde Academy in Florida, where his support has helped fund educational facilities and scholarships. His partnership with New Balance has also supplied backpacks and school materials to hundreds of students.

In New York, his community programs include youth leadership opportunities and dental-health initiatives for children. Lindor and his wife, Katia, have supported families navigating disabilities and medical challenges, while his efforts in Puerto Rico have included hurricane relief and the restoration of athletic facilities.

In an interview published Monday by Men’s Journal, Lindor spoke about the importance of being recognized in the name of Clemente, a figure he admired growing up. The honor comes after years of sustained service rather than a single charitable campaign.

What the Roberto Clemente Award recognizes

Each of MLB’s 30 clubs nominates one player annually. The league-wide winner is selected for character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions on and off the field, with the award presented during the World Series.

For Lindor, the 2026 honor is a career milestone measured not in home runs or postseason victories, but in the communities he has helped.
