Rakuten Eagles Acquire Takuya Kai From Giants in Cash Trade
Rakuten Eagles acquire catcher Takuya Kai from the Yomiuri Giants in a cash trade, adding a seven-time Gold Glove winner for the 2027 season.

The Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles have acquired veteran catcher Takuya Kai from the Yomiuri Giants in a cash trade, adding one of Japan’s most decorated defensive catchers as they reshape the roster for 2027. Rakuten announced the agreement on Friday, October 30.
Kai, 33, returns to the Pacific League after two seasons with Yomiuri. The move is unusually abrupt: he joined the Giants as a free agent after the 2024 season on a reported five-year contract, but his playing time fell sharply in 2026.
Limited role in Tokyo opens a new opportunity
Kai appeared in only 13 games for the Giants this season and started three behind the plate. He batted .100 with a .543 OPS, although both of his hits were go-ahead home runs.
Yomiuri baseball operations chief Yasuhiro Mizuno said the club wanted to find Kai a place where he could receive a better opportunity to play. Kai said he was surprised by the trade but grateful for his two years with the Giants and eager to repay the faith shown by his new team.
Rakuten adds experience to an unsettled catching group
The Eagles finished last in 2026 and entered the offseason with uncertainty at catcher. Hikaru Ota, who led Rakuten catchers with 100 appearances, has indicated that he intends to exercise his domestic free-agent rights. The club also moved on from veteran Hikaru Ito and Akira Ishihara, while using its first-round draft pick on Aoyama Gakuin University catcher Kai Watanabe.
General manager Kazuhisa Ishii said Kai brings a “winning mentality” and can set an example for the club’s younger catchers and pitchers. Kai is expected to be introduced in Sendai on November 3.
Few active catchers can match his résumé. A former developmental draft pick, Kai established himself with the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks and has won seven Gold Glove awards and three Best Nine selections. He also helped Japan win Olympic gold in Tokyo and the 2023 World Baseball Classic.
The trade gives Rakuten a proven field general at a position in transition — and gives Kai a clearer path back to regular playing time in the league where he built his reputation.
