The Milwaukee Brewers moved within one victory of their first World Series championship on Monday, October 26, overpowering the Tampa Bay Rays 10-1 in Game 3 at Tropicana Field. An eight-run fifth inning, all scored with two outs, turned a tight contest into a rout and gave Milwaukee a commanding 3-0 lead in the best-of-seven series.

The inning was historic in its own right. Milwaukee became the first team in postseason history to record seven consecutive hits, according to MLB, and its eight runs with two outs set a World Series record for a single inning.

A replay review opens the floodgates

The Brewers led 2-0 when Jackson Chourio singled and stole second in the fifth. After Christian Yelich walked, William Contreras appeared to hit into an inning-ending force play at second. Replay overturned the call, keeping the inning alive.

Rays starter Freddy Peralta exited, and the Brewers immediately punished the Tampa Bay bullpen. Brice Turang and Garrett Mitchell delivered run-scoring singles, Cooper Pratt and Sal Frelick followed with doubles, and David Hamilton added another RBI single. Chourio capped the burst with a run-scoring double, his second hit of the inning.

Chourio had four hits before the fifth was over. At 22 years old, he became the youngest player with four hits in a World Series game since Joe Garagiola in 1946, according to MLB.

Gasser quiets Tampa Bay as title comes into view

Milwaukee left-hander Robert Gasser supplied the other half of the performance, working six scoreless innings while allowing just one hit. Every Brewers starter reached base, and eight of the nine drove in at least one run.

For Tampa Bay, the loss was particularly damaging after two narrow defeats in Milwaukee. The Rays returned home hoping to shift the series, but instead face elimination in Game 4 on Tuesday, October 27.

The Brewers have never won the World Series. One more victory would complete a sweep of both the National League Championship Series and the World Series, a combination last achieved by the 1976 Cincinnati Reds, before the LCS expanded to a best-of-seven format.
