Amsterdam Pirates
Amsterdam Pirates are one of the established powers of Dutch baseball and a perennial contender in the Honkbal Hoofdklasse. Founded in 1959, the Amsterdam club has developed a reputation built on championship success, high-level player development and sustained competition against the strongest teams in the Netherlands. The Pirates have won seven Dutch national championships, taking the title in 1987, 1990, 2008, 2011, 2019, 2021 and 2023. That spread is significant. Rather than dominating during one isolated generation, Amsterdam has repeatedly rebuilt competitive teams capable of challenging for the Holland Series across several different eras. In modern Dutch baseball, that consistency has made Amsterdam Pirates one of the teams against which championship-level performance is measured. Championship History and European Success Amsterdam's first national championship came in 1987, followed by another title in 1990. After an extended period away from the top of the podium, the Pirates returned to championship level in 2008 and established themselves as one of the dominant clubs of the modern Hoofdklasse. The 2011 team was particularly strong. Amsterdam combined an elite pitching staff with a productive lineup and defeated Pioniers in the Holland Series. Rob Cordemans delivered one of the standout pitching seasons in Dutch baseball, while Vince Rooi and Wesley Connor were among the team's major offensive contributors. Pirates added further championships in 2019, 2021 and 2023, with several of those titles coming through postseason battles against Neptunus. The club's biggest international achievement came in 2016, when Amsterdam Pirates won the European Champions Cup. The Pirates defeated Italian powerhouse Rimini 5-4 in ten innings in the final, with Kenny Berkenbosch driving in the decisive run. Winning Europe's premier club competition elevated Amsterdam beyond domestic success. It demonstrated that the Pirates could compete with and defeat the strongest clubs from the Netherlands, Italy and the rest of European baseball in a tournament environment where pitching depth, bullpen management and roster balance are immediately tested. Amsterdam Pirates and the Neptunus Rivalry The rivalry between Amsterdam Pirates and Neptunus has become one of the defining matchups in Dutch baseball. Neptunus has historically been the most decorated organization in the country, but Amsterdam has repeatedly been the club most capable of challenging Rotterdam's dominance. Their frequent postseason meetings have made the matchup especially important during the modern era of the Honkbal Hoofdklasse. Amsterdam's championships in 2019, 2021 and 2023 reinforced that rivalry. Those Pirates teams demonstrated an ability to win extended postseason series against an opponent accustomed to controlling the Dutch championship race. That competition continued into 2026. Amsterdam produced an excellent 30-6 regular-season record and swept Oosterhout Twins in the postseason to reach another Holland Series. Neptunus ultimately won the championship series, but the season again placed Pirates among the strongest teams in Dutch baseball. The 2026 roster also showed the balance associated with successful Amsterdam teams. Lars Huijer led the rotation with a 1.60 ERA and 84 strikeouts, while Dennis Burgersdijk provided another reliable starting option. Offensively, Jeandro Tromp, Tommy van de Sanden and Delano Selassa were among the team's most productive hitters. It was another reminder that Amsterdam rarely depends entirely on one part of its roster. When the Pirates are at their best, quality starting pitching, defensive stability and a lineup capable of producing both on-base percentage and extra-base damage usually work together. Player Development and the Pirates Identity One of Amsterdam Pirates' most important characteristics is the club's ability to combine established internationals with players progressing through the Dutch baseball system. Over the years, the Pirates have featured numerous players with experience for the Netherlands national team and in international competition. Sidney de Jong, Charles Urbanus, Rob Cordemans, Vince Rooi, Kenny Berkenbosch, Nick Urbanus and Gilmer Lampe are among the notable names connected with successful Amsterdam teams. That experience has helped create a clear competitive identity. Amsterdam teams are generally expected to contend rather than simply qualify for the postseason. The standard is measured in Holland Series appearances, championships and qualification for European competition. Even when important players depart, the organization has repeatedly demonstrated an ability to rebuild without disappearing from the top of the standings for extended periods. That is what separates Amsterdam Pirates from many successful teams with shorter competitive windows. The club has won championships in four different decades, captured a European title and remained a central part of the modern Honkbal Hoofdklasse championship race. For baseball fans following the Netherlands, Amsterdam Pirates are therefore more than one of the league's historic names. They are one of Dutch baseball's most important modern organizations: a club with championship expectations, a strong development structure and a proven ability to remain competitive across generations.
