The 2026 French Division 1 Baseball season enters its decisive stage this weekend, with Savigny-sur-Orge, defending champion Rouen, La Rochelle and Montpellier competing for two places in the French Baseball Series. In the centenary season of France’s top baseball championship, both semifinal matchups carry compelling storylines.

The regular season is over. From here, two victories are enough to reach the championship series.

The Lions de Savigny-sur-Orge, who finished first at 20-8, face the fourth-place Montpellier Barracudas, while the second-seeded Rouen Huskies meet the La Rochelle Boucaniers. Both best-of-three semifinals are scheduled for September 12-13.

There is additional significance attached to this year’s postseason. France’s national baseball championship began in 1926, making 2026 its centenary season.

For Savigny, it is an opportunity to convert a first-place regular season into a championship run. For Rouen, the objective is a 20th French title. Montpellier is trying to avenge a painful finish to both the 2025 season and the final weekend of 2026, while La Rochelle has another opportunity to upset one of French baseball’s traditional powers.

Savigny enters playoffs as France’s No. 1 seed

Savigny-sur-Orge earned the top seed with a 20-8 record and .714 winning percentage, narrowly finishing ahead of Rouen at 19-9.

The Lions secured first place in emphatic fashion against the same opponent they will now face in the semifinal.

On the final weekend of the regular season, Savigny swept Montpellier 18-5 and 8-5. Those victories left the Barracudas fourth and guaranteed Savigny home-field advantage for the postseason.

That recent history immediately makes the semifinal intriguing.

Savigny has demonstrated that it can overpower Montpellier, but the shortened best-of-three format offers almost no room for a poor performance. One defeat puts a team immediately on the verge of elimination.

The format itself is new for this stage of the competition. The French federation modified the postseason structure during the season, reducing the semifinals from a longer series to a best-of-three played over a single weekend.

For Savigny, the stakes extend beyond simply reaching another final.

The Lions have won five French championships, but their last national Division 1 title came in 2004. They returned to the national spotlight by winning the Challenge de France in 2025, ending a 20-year wait for a major trophy.

A Division 1 championship in the centenary season would carry even greater significance.

Montpellier gets immediate chance for revenge

Few semifinalists enter a postseason with a more obvious revenge opportunity than Montpellier.

The Barracudas were competing for first place deep into the summer before a difficult August changed their position. Consecutive defeats against Rouen were followed by the season-ending sweep against Savigny, dropping Montpellier to fourth despite a 17-11 record.

The reward for surviving the regular season is another meeting with the club that beat them 18-5 and 8-5 only two weeks ago.

Montpellier, however, has significant postseason experience.

The Barracudas reached the 2025 French Division 1 final after finishing first in the regular season. Their championship bid ended when Rouen swept them 3-0, winning the deciding third game in Montpellier.

The club also reached the final of the 2025 Baseball European Cup, eliminating Rouen in the semifinal before falling 8-3 to Tenerife Marlins in the championship game.

Montpellier therefore enters this weekend as the fourth seed, but not as an inexperienced outsider.

The Barracudas are still searching for their first French championship since completing a run of three consecutive titles from 1993 through 1995.

Rouen carries seven-game winning streak into postseason

If Savigny enters as the No. 1 seed, Rouen may enter as the hottest team.

The defending champions closed the regular season with seven consecutive victories, transforming a potentially uncomfortable playoff race into a second-place finish at 19-9.

Over those final seven games, the Huskies scored 71 runs and allowed only 15, collecting 78 hits while winning four games by mercy rule.

Several hitters caught fire during that stretch.

Hugo Blondel batted .423 with 12 RBIs, Gabriel Harrison hit .500, and Ryosuke Nishikawa produced a .427 average with 12 RBIs, three doubles, two triples and two home runs. Kento Megumi added three homers and eight RBIs during the run.

Rouen’s pitching was similarly effective. According to the club’s end-of-season review, Quentin Mercadier went 2-0 with a 0.98 ERA and 26 strikeouts in 18⅓ innings during the seven-game streak. Keino Ito went 4-0 with a 3.58 ERA and 27 strikeouts in 27⅓ innings.

That form makes the defending champions particularly dangerous entering a short postseason series.

Rouen chasing 20th French championship

The historical stakes are clear.

Rouen won its 19th French championship in 2025, sweeping Montpellier in the French Baseball Series. Remarkably, all 19 championships had come during the previous 22 seasons.

A title in 2026 would therefore make Rouen a 20-time French champion.

Only Paris Université Club has won more, with 22 championships. The PUC, however, finished last in Division 1 this season and is set to be relegated.

Rouen has already collected one national trophy this year.

The Huskies won the 2026 Challenge de France, defeating La Rochelle in the final in May.

The opponent standing between Rouen and another championship series is, therefore, very familiar.

La Rochelle gets rematch with Rouen

La Rochelle’s rise is arguably the most compelling team-development story among the four semifinalists.

The Boucaniers finished the regular season 17-11, level with Montpellier, and secured third place. Now they face a Rouen club they have already encountered repeatedly in 2026.

Rouen won both of their most recent regular-season meetings, beating La Rochelle 17-4 and 2-1 in August. Earlier in the year, however, the teams split two games in La Rochelle, with the Boucaniers winning 8-4 before losing 3-2 the following day.

There is also recent knockout history.

La Rochelle reached the Challenge de France final for the first time in club history earlier this season after eliminating Montpellier in the semifinal. Rouen ultimately denied the Boucaniers the trophy.

The semifinal therefore provides La Rochelle with a second opportunity this season to eliminate the defending national champion.

The Boucaniers remain the least decorated of the four teams still competing, but their 2026 results suggest the gap with France’s established powers is shrinking.

Rouen’s late-season offense could be decisive

Of the two semifinals, Rouen-La Rochelle arguably presents the clearest contrast between momentum and opportunity.

Rouen’s seven-game winning streak included dominant offensive performances and increasingly effective pitching.

The Huskies closed the regular season by overwhelming Sénart 13-2 and 14-1, results that secured second place.

La Rochelle, meanwhile, has already demonstrated that it can compete in elimination baseball. Its run to the Challenge de France final included one of the notable upsets of the French season when the Boucaniers knocked out Montpellier.

In a three-game series, one strong starting pitching performance can change the entire matchup.

That makes Game 1 especially important.

Short semifinal format leaves no margin for error

The four remaining clubs have spent months playing for this weekend, but their championship ambitions can now disappear in less than 24 hours.

Both semifinals are best-of-three series.

Game 1 is scheduled for Saturday, September 12. Game 2 follows Sunday morning, with a third game later Sunday if the series is tied.

The winners advance to the French Baseball Series, which returns to a best-of-five format.

The championship series is scheduled across September 19-20 and September 26-27, with three victories required to become French champion.

That difference in formats makes the semifinal particularly volatile.

A deep rotation can dominate a five-game final. In a best-of-three semifinal, however, one exceptional start, one costly defensive error or one big inning can effectively decide a season.

Four teams, four very different championship stories

There is no obvious lack of storylines entering the final stage of the 2026 French baseball season.

Savigny finished first and is trying to turn its strongest regular season in years into a long-awaited national championship.

Montpellier has an immediate opportunity to erase its season-ending losses against Savigny and return to the final one year after being swept by Rouen.

La Rochelle is attempting to continue one of the most significant rises in French club baseball and reach another major final.

And Rouen is chasing championship No. 20 while attempting to successfully defend the title it won in 2025.

All four ambitions now come down to one weekend.

In the 100th anniversary season of France’s top baseball championship, only two clubs will still be playing for the title by Sunday evening.
