Choi Won-jun became the KBO League’s new single-season hits leader on Wednesday, collecting three hits to reach 204 as the KT Wiz beat the Samsung Lions 9-3 at Suwon KT Wiz Park.

The 29-year-old entered KT’s final home game with 201 hits, one short of the league record Víctor Reyes set for the Lotte Giants in 2024. Choi tied the mark with a fifth-inning double, broke it with a seventh-inning single and added an RBI single in the eighth to push the record two hits higher.

Choi turns KT’s home finale into a record night

Choi finished 3-for-4 with a walk, an RBI and a run scored. His record-setting hit came during a night when KT’s lineup steadily pulled away from second-place Samsung.

Jo Dae-hyun opened the scoring with a two-run double in the second inning. KT added a run in the sixth and another in the seventh before breaking the game open with five runs in the eighth.

Choi’s third hit brought home the first run of that eighth-inning rally. Sam Hilliard then launched a grand slam to center field for his 42nd home run of the season, moving within one of KIA Tigers star Kim Do-yeong in the KBO home run race.

Samsung avoided a shutout when Lewin Díaz cleared the bases with a three-run double in the ninth, but the late damage did not threaten KT’s eighth consecutive victory.

So Hyeong-jun sharpens up before Korean Series

KT starter So Hyeong-jun worked five scoreless innings, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out five. He improved to 9-3 and gave the regular-season champions another encouraging postseason tune-up.

KT had already secured the KBO pennant and a direct place in the Korean Series, while Samsung had locked up second place. That left Choi’s record chase as the night’s central storyline—and he completed it with three different hits across his final four plate appearances.

The victory improved KT to 88-49-5. Samsung fell to 83-55-3 after its final regular-season game.

Choi’s 204-hit mark remains open to extension. KT still has games remaining, including another meeting with Samsung in Daegu on October 11.
