The Seattle Mariners have hired 36-year-old Jason Kanzler as their new manager, choosing a player-development specialist who has never managed at any level to lead a talented roster back toward the MLB postseason. Kanzler becomes the 22nd manager in franchise history and the second-youngest current manager in Major League Baseball.

  • New manager: Jason Kanzler, 36
  • Previous role: Chicago Cubs director of player development
  • MLB experience: Houston Astros coach, 2022–23
  • Seattle’s 2026 record: 76-86

Mariners choose development over managerial experience

Seattle announced Kanzler’s appointment after a search that also included former Houston Astros manager Joe Espada. The Mariners ultimately selected a first-time skipper whose recent work has focused on building players and coaching systems rather than managing games from the dugout.

President of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto said the organization wanted a manager capable of challenging the entire club to improve. General manager Justin Hollander highlighted Kanzler’s leadership, communication and ability to connect the major league roster, coaching staff and front office.

Kanzler replaces Dan Wilson after Seattle finished 76-86 and missed the postseason in 2026. The result was a sharp reversal from 2025, when the Mariners won the American League West and reached Game 7 of the AL Championship Series.

Kanzler brings Cubs and Astros experience

Kanzler spent the past three seasons as the Cubs’ director of player development, overseeing Chicago’s minor league system, players and coaching staff from 2024 through 2026.

Before moving to Chicago, he spent five seasons in the Astros organization. His rise included assignments as a minor league hitting coach and hitting coordinator before he joined Houston’s major league staff. Kanzler was part of the Astros’ 2022 World Series championship staff and served as assistant hitting coach in 2023.

That background gives Seattle a manager closely tied to modern player development, hitting instruction and the movement of information between the farm system and the major league club. It also makes his appointment unusual: Kanzler will be managing a team for the first time while taking charge at baseball’s highest level.

Seattle bets on a young, unconventional leader

Kanzler will be older than only Washington Nationals manager Blake Butera among current MLB skippers. The Mariners are betting that his communication skills and development experience can help a roster with established talent rebound immediately rather than enter a long rebuild.

A former outfielder, Kanzler played three seasons in the Minnesota Twins’ minor league system after being selected in the 20th round of the 2013 MLB Draft. At the University at Buffalo, he became the first NCAA player to win two Rawlings Gold Glove Awards.

Kanzler said he was excited to begin work with a roster he believes has talent across every area of the game. His first managerial job now comes with a direct mandate: turn Seattle’s 2026 disappointment into a return to October.
