Petey Halpin’s Go-Ahead Homer Gives Guardians 2-1 ALCS Lead
Petey Halpin hit a go-ahead two-run homer as the Cleveland Guardians beat the Tampa Bay Rays 3-2 in Game 3 of the 2026 ALCS.

Petey Halpin hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the fifth inning as the Cleveland Guardians beat the Tampa Bay Rays 3-2 in Game 3 of the American League Championship Series on Thursday, October 15, at Progressive Field.
The win gave Cleveland a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven ALCS and moved the Guardians within two victories of their first World Series appearance since 2016.
Halpin turns the game with one swing
Cleveland led 1-0 after Nathaniel Lowe doubled home a run in the second inning, but Tampa Bay moved ahead on Chandler Simpson’s two-run triple in the fourth.
Patrick Bailey opened the bottom of the fifth with an infield single before Halpin faced Rays starter Griffin Jax. The No. 8 hitter worked the count to 2-2, then drove a 95.9 mph sinker into the right-field seats.
The ball left Halpin’s bat at 105 mph and traveled a Statcast-projected 385 feet. His dramatic bat flip matched the size of the moment: the swing turned a 2-1 deficit into the final 3-2 score.
Halpin had spent much of the regular season in a reserve role, but manager Stephen Vogt put him in the starting lineup for Cleveland’s decisive ALDS Game 5. He went 2-for-3 with two doubles that day and has now started four consecutive postseason games.
Williams and bullpen protect the lead
Gavin Williams struck out nine over five innings, allowing Tampa Bay’s only two runs. His 33 strikeouts in 16⅔ postseason innings give him a 45.9% strikeout rate, the highest in MLB postseason history among pitchers with at least 10 innings.
Daniel Espino, Erik Sabrowski and Hunter Gaddis protected the one-run advantage before Cade Smith recorded the final four outs, finishing the win by retiring Victor Mesa Jr.
The Rays managed only three hits and received no further offense after Simpson’s triple. Cleveland, meanwhile, has won five of its past six postseason games after recovering from a 2-0 deficit against the Chicago White Sox in the Division Series.
Game 4 is scheduled for Friday night in Cleveland. History now favors the Guardians: teams winning Game 3 of a best-of-seven postseason series tied 1-1 have advanced 70% of the time.
