Teruaki Sato Set for MLB Posting After NPB Triple Crown Season

The Hanshin Tigers will approve Teruaki Sato’s move to Major League Baseball through the posting system this offseason, putting one of Japan’s most accomplished power hitters on the international market after a Triple Crown season.

Sato, who turns 28 before the 2027 season, led the Central League with a .306 batting average, 39 home runs and 106 RBIs in 2026. The left-handed-hitting third baseman is also positioned as a leading candidate for a second straight Central League MVP award after winning the honor in 2025.

What the posting decision means

Hanshin’s approval is the first essential step, but Sato will not become available to MLB clubs until the posting process is formally opened. Once he is posted, all 30 MLB teams will have 45 days to negotiate a contract with him.

Because Sato is older than 25 and has completed more than six professional seasons, he will not be limited by MLB’s international amateur bonus pools. He can sign a major-league contract of any length and value, while the Tigers would receive a release fee based on the guaranteed value of the deal.

If Sato does not reach an agreement during the 45-day window, he would return to Hanshin for the 2027 season and could not be posted again until the following offseason.

Sato brings proven power and durability

Sato’s 2026 performance confirmed the progress he made a year earlier. He hit 40 home runs with a .924 OPS in 2025, earning Central League MVP honors and a Golden Glove at third base. Across six NPB seasons, he has topped 20 home runs five times and produced a career .851 OPS.

His power is the defining tool, but his profile is not without risk. Sato struck out in roughly 27 percent of his plate appearances over the past two seasons, a figure MLB clubs will weigh against his home-run production and improving plate discipline. He also drew walks in 10.3 percent of his plate appearances during that span.

Durability strengthens his case. Sato has appeared in at least 120 games in every NPB season, and he has experience beyond Japan’s domestic schedule. He helped Hanshin win the 2023 Japan Series and represented Samurai Japan at the 2026 World Baseball Classic, where he produced three batted balls with exit velocities of at least 100 mph.

Primarily a third baseman, Sato has also logged extensive outfield time during his NPB career. That versatility gives interested clubs options as they evaluate whether his long-term home should remain at the hot corner or shift elsewhere.

The timing makes Sato particularly significant for the coming MLB offseason. With few impact bats expected to reach the open market, Hanshin’s decision adds a proven middle-of-the-order hitter at the start of his prime.
