Tseng Sung-en delivered one of the biggest run-producing performances in CPBL history on Monday, September 28, driving in nine runs as the CTBC Brothers beat the TSG Hawks 19-10 at Taichung Intercontinental Baseball Stadium.

The 26-year-old outfielder hit a grand slam and a three-run homer, then added two bases-loaded walks. His nine RBIs set a single-game CPBL record for a Taiwanese player and moved him into second place overall, behind the league record of 11 set by import Olmedo Sáenz in 1997.

A 10-run first inning sets the tone

CTBC seized control before the Hawks could settle into the game. The Brothers sent 15 batters to the plate in the first inning and scored 10 runs on eight hits, two walks and an error.

Tseng supplied the decisive blow with the first grand slam of his professional career. It was also the Brothers’ first double-digit opening inning since July 14, 1995, when the club scored 13 first-inning runs against the Jungo Bears.

The Hawks answered with four runs in the top of the second, but Tseng immediately restored CTBC’s momentum. His three-run homer in the bottom of the third made it 14-4 and completed the second multi-homer game of his career.

Two walks complete a record night

Tseng’s final two RBIs came without a swing. He drew bases-loaded walks in the fourth and seventh innings, finishing with two hits, two home runs, two walks and nine RBIs.

The previous domestic-player mark was eight RBIs in a game. Tseng’s total left him two short of the overall CPBL record, but it gave the Brothers a historic offensive centerpiece in a game that featured 34 combined hits.

Starting pitcher Nivaldo Rodriguez worked five innings and earned his league-leading 11th victory despite allowing four runs on 10 hits. Steven Moya hit a three-run homer, his 19th of the season, during a six-run eighth inning that helped the Hawks cut into the deficit.

Brothers return to the second-half lead

The result carried extra weight beyond Tseng’s record. CTBC returned to first place in the CPBL’s second-half standings, moving a half-game ahead of the Rakuten Monkeys after Rakuten lost 7-4 to the Uni-Lions in extra innings.

With the second-half race tightening, the Brothers combined a historic individual performance with a 19-run statement. Tseng’s two swings accounted for seven runs, but his patience with the bases loaded completed a nine-RBI night the league had never seen from a Taiwanese player.
