Orlando Piña’s Two-Out Ninth-Inning Homer Stuns LMP-Leading Naranjeros
Orlando Piña hit a two-out, two-run ninth-inning homer as Venados de Mazatlán rallied from 6-3 down to stun LMP leaders Naranjeros 7-6 on October 27.

HERMOSILLO, Mexico — Orlando Piña hit a two-run home run with two outs in the ninth inning Tuesday, October 27, lifting the Venados de Mazatlán to a 7-6 comeback victory over the Liga Mexicana del Pacífico-leading Naranjeros de Hermosillo. Four days after returning to Mazatlán on loan, Piña turned a three-run late deficit into the Venados’ third consecutive win.
Hermosillo led 6-3 after six innings at Estadio Fernando Valenzuela. Mazatlán scored once in the seventh and again in the eighth, setting up a final chance against Naranjeros reliever Colten Brewer. With two outs in the top of the ninth, Gaige Howard singled and Piña drove the next decisive blow over the left-center-field fence to put the visitors ahead 7-6.
A three-inning comeback against the league leaders
The Venados had already erased one early deficit, moving ahead 3-2 in the fifth on run-scoring hits by Nick Lucky and Ramón Ríos. Hermosillo responded immediately, with Reivaj García and Dylan Jasso helping the home side regain the lead. García delivered another run-producing hit in the sixth as the Naranjeros built a 6-3 advantage.
Ramón Ríos brought home a run on a fielder’s choice in the seventh, and Andrés Álvarez added another in the eighth. Howard finished with three hits, while Ricardo Valenzuela also homered for Mazatlán.
Gerardo Gutiérrez earned the win to improve to 2-1, Brewer fell to 0-2, and Elkin Alcalá worked a scoreless bottom of the ninth for his second save. The result left Mazatlán at 5-7 and Hermosillo at 8-4 in the 2026-27 season.
Piña makes an immediate impact after loan move
Piña’s decisive swing came only days after Venados announced his arrival on loan from Algodoneros de Guasave on October 24, with Juan Mora moving to Guasave on a separate loan arrangement. Piña had already contributed to another dramatic finish on October 25, drawing a bases-loaded walk in the ninth to complete a 5-4 walk-off victory over Charros de Jalisco.
His latest contribution came on the road against one of the league’s early pace-setters. What looked like a damaging defeat after six innings instead became Mazatlán’s third straight win and another reminder of how quickly a late-inning lead can disappear in winter baseball.
