Leonel Valera’s Grand Slam Sends Caribes to First 10 Wins in LVBP
Leonel Valera hit a first-inning grand slam as Caribes de Anzoátegui beat Águilas del Zulia 10-6 to become the first team with 10 LVBP wins in 2026–27.

PUERTO LA CRUZ, Venezuela — Leonel Valera launched a first-inning grand slam Tuesday night as Caribes de Anzoátegui defeated Águilas del Zulia 10-6, becoming the first club to reach 10 wins in the 2026–27 Venezuelan Professional Baseball League season.
Caribes improved to 10-3 at Estadio Alfonso “Chico” Carrasquel, riding a four-homer attack that put the game out of reach early before Zulia threatened to make it close.
Valera puts Caribes in control immediately
With the bases loaded in the bottom of the first, Valera drove a pitch over the left-field fence to bring home Herlis Rodríguez, Gabriel González and Omar Alfonzo. The shortstop finished 2-for-3 with four RBIs, a walk and a hit-by-pitch.
Anzoátegui added three more runs in the second. Hernán Pérez brought in one with a sacrifice fly, and González followed with a two-run homer for a 7-0 lead.
Águilas refused to disappear. An RBI single from Arón Estrada and a three-run shot by Luis Castro cut the deficit to 7-4 in the third. Caribes answered with solo home runs by Alfonzo in the fourth and Carlos Mendoza in the fifth.
Six home runs, but the early grand slam decides it
Jhonny Level hit a two-run homer for Zulia in the eighth, bringing the visitors within 9-6. Romer Cuadrado’s run-scoring single in the bottom half restored a four-run cushion and completed the scoring.
The clubs combined for six home runs, four by Caribes and two by Águilas. Leonard García earned the win in relief, while Zulia starter Andry Lara took the loss after allowing seven runs in two innings.
The result gave Caribes the early lead in the LVBP standings at 10-3, with another home meeting against Águilas scheduled for Wednesday, October 28. The league season remains young, but Valera’s first-inning swing turned a potentially tight contest into the club’s milestone 10th victory.
