Brayan Rocchio Walk-Off Pulls Guardians Within Half-Game of White Sox
Brayan Rocchio’s two-run walk-off double gave the Guardians a 7-6 win over the White Sox, cutting Chicago’s AL Central lead to half a game.

Brayan Rocchio delivered a two-run walk-off double with two outs in the ninth inning Tuesday night, lifting the Cleveland Guardians to a 7-6 win over the Chicago White Sox and cutting Chicago’s AL Central lead to just half a game.
The swing turned a game Cleveland appeared on the verge of losing into one of the most consequential results of the September division race. With the White Sox leading 6-5 and runners at second and third, Rocchio drove a 101 mph fastball from Grant Taylor toward the left-field line. Sam Antonacci made a diving attempt, but the ball dropped beyond his reach and both runners scored.
Rocchio delivers another September moment
Late-season heroics have become a recurring theme for Rocchio. The walk-off was his seventh career walk-off plate appearance and his fourth in September, adding another chapter to a stretch that has made him one of Cleveland’s most dangerous hitters in high-leverage situations.
The stakes made this one especially significant. A loss would have pushed the Guardians 2½ games behind Chicago with only 10 games remaining. Instead, Cleveland improved to 77-75 and moved within half a game of the first-place White Sox, who fell to 77-74.
Chicago has held at least a share of first place since July 4, but the margin has now almost disappeared heading into the series finale.
Travis Bazzana powers Cleveland with two home runs
Rocchio supplied the final swing, but Travis Bazzana was central to keeping Cleveland in position to rally. The rookie homered twice, including a first-inning shot immediately after Jo Adell’s two-run homer gave the Guardians an early advantage.
Bazzana finished 2-for-4 with two runs, two RBIs and two home runs. Adell’s first-inning blast traveled 442 feet and was his 22nd homer of the season.
The White Sox erased Cleveland’s early lead with four runs in the sixth. Chase Meidroth drove in a run, Randal Grichuk added a sacrifice fly and Miguel Vargas delivered a two-run single as Chicago moved in front.
Cleveland’s bullpen kept the deficit manageable from there. Cade Smith recorded five outs on 16 pitches and earned the win, setting up the ninth-inning comeback.
AL Central race heads into crucial series finale
The result leaves almost nothing separating the two teams at the top of the AL Central. Cleveland will send rookie left-hander Parker Messick, who enters at 11-9 with a 2.51 ERA, to the mound for Wednesday’s series finale.
For the Guardians, Tuesday’s comeback preserved a realistic path to a third consecutive AL Central title. For the White Sox, a division lead that looked considerably safer only a day earlier is now down to half a game.
With the regular season entering its final stretch, Wednesday’s matchup in Cleveland has effectively become one of the biggest games remaining on the American League schedule.
