Red Sox Clinch 2026 Playoff Berth After Remarkable Midseason Turnaround
The Boston Red Sox clinched a 2026 MLB playoff berth after climbing from 14 games below .500, completing one of baseball’s biggest turnarounds.

The Boston Red Sox are headed back to October after completing one of the most dramatic turnarounds of the 2026 MLB season. Boston clinched a postseason berth on Sunday, September 20, despite a 5-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field. The ticket was punched when the Atlanta Braves beat the Houston Astros 4-2 later in the afternoon.
The result sends Boston to the postseason for a second consecutive year and completes a comeback that looked highly unlikely in June. The Red Sox fell to 32-46 and 14 games below .500 before reversing their season under interim manager Chad Tracy.
Red Sox complete a remarkable turnaround
Boston did not get to celebrate with a win. Tampa Bay scored four runs in the first inning Sunday and never relinquished the lead, with Griffin Jax working five scoreless innings in the Rays’ 5-1 victory. Trevor Story prevented a shutout with a ninth-inning home run.
But the Red Sox still had another route into October. Players remained at Tropicana Field and watched the end of Atlanta’s game against Houston, knowing an Astros loss would secure Boston’s place in the postseason.
Atlanta delivered. Mike Yastrzemski broke a 1-1 tie with a three-run homer in the sixth inning, sending the Braves toward a 4-2 victory and simultaneously eliminating the final scenario that could keep Boston out of the playoff field.
The moment carried an unusual Boston connection: Yastrzemski is the grandson of Red Sox Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski.
From 32-46 to October baseball
The clinch is significant because of how far Boston had to climb. The Red Sox were 32-46 during June and appeared headed toward a lost season. Instead, they produced a 31-5 surge across July and August and went 52-26 after reaching their low point.
That recovery put Boston among a small group of teams in the World Series era to reach the postseason after falling at least 14 games below .500 during the same season.
Boston finished Sunday at 84-72. The club currently occupies an American League Wild Card position with the postseason scheduled to begin on September 29.
October is secured, but the seeding race continues
Clinching a berth does not end Boston’s regular-season work. The Red Sox still have games remaining and postseason seeding to settle, while the American League bracket continues to take shape around them.
For one night, however, the larger story was simply getting there. A season that appeared close to slipping away before the All-Star break will now continue into October.
