Australia’s professional baseball season returns on November 19 with four clubs, 39 games per team and the Claxton Shield at stake. The Adelaide Giants, Brisbane Bandits, Perth Heat and Sydney Blue Sox will contest the 2026–27 Australian Baseball League (ABL), with the championship decided in a best-of-three series from January 29–31, 2027.

It is a compact field, but not a quiet offseason. Defending champion Adelaide has undergone changes in its front office and dugout, Sydney is trying to turn a championship-series appearance into its first modern ABL title, and Perth and Brisbane have an opportunity to disrupt that rematch. All four clubs have a direct route to the same prize: finish in the top two and play for the Claxton Shield.

Four teams, one Claxton Shield

Adelaide Giants: a title defense amid change

Adelaide enters the summer after beating Sydney 6–2 in the deciding game of January’s Championship Series, securing a third Claxton Shield in four seasons. Yet the Giants will not simply roll the same operation into November. Three-time championship manager Chris Adamson stepped down in September, and longtime general manager Nathan Davison also departed. Black Pearl Sports Group has taken responsibility for day-to-day club operations alongside the continuing involvement of Pelligra Group.

The roster has an intriguing addition: Australian left-hander Alexander Wells, the 2024–25 ABL MVP and former Sydney pitcher, has committed to Adelaide. He joins twin brother Lachlan Wells, giving the reigning champions another established arm as they prepare for a season under new leadership.

Sydney Blue Sox: another shot after the final

Sydney reached the 2025–26 Championship Series but lost the deciding game to Adelaide at Blacktown International Sportspark. That near miss gives the Blue Sox a clear target. Their challenge is to build another contender in a four-team league where repeated meetings leave little room to hide weaknesses.

Sydney will also enter the campaign with a new manager, part of a coaching reset announced alongside Perth’s appointment in August. The Blue Sox open their season against the Heat in Perth, giving both clubs an early test against a direct rival.

Perth Heat: a new voice in the dugout

Perth has appointed Lance Rymel as manager for 2026–27. The American brings experience from several levels of affiliated baseball and winter-league coaching. For a club with four modern-era ABL championships, the immediate question is whether that new direction can translate into a return to the January title series.

The Heat host Sydney in the opening round before visiting Brisbane, an early sequence that should offer a useful measure of the new manager’s team.

Brisbane Bandits: aiming to reclaim the shield

Brisbane’s four consecutive championships from 2016 through 2019 remain one of the modern league’s defining runs. The Bandits have not added to that tally since, and the 2026–27 schedule offers an immediate chance to test themselves against the reigning champions: Brisbane travels to Adelaide for the opening series on November 19–22.

With only four teams in the competition, the Bandits will see every opponent repeatedly. Turning those head-to-head series into consistency across the full summer will matter more than any single opening-weekend result.

When does the 2026–27 Australian Baseball League start?

The regular season begins Thursday, November 19, 2026, and runs over 10 rounds into January. Each club is scheduled for 39 games; the Boxing Day weekend series is shortened to three games. The top two teams will meet in the best-of-three ABL Championship Series, January 29–31, 2027, hosted by the regular-season first-place finisher.

The season is also a transition point for the league itself. Baseball Australia has outlined a move toward a centrally owned and operated model and an expected return to six teams in 2027–28. For now, the Adelaide Giants, Brisbane Bandits, Perth Heat and Sydney Blue Sox have one summer to settle the four-team race before that planned next chapter.
