Astros Win AL West at 81-81 After 20-31 Start, Shut Out A’s 9-0
Houston beat the Athletics 9-0 on September 27 to win the 2026 AL West at 81-81 after a 20-31 start. Texas lost 6-4, sealing the division.

The Houston Astros won the 2026 American League West on Sunday, September 27, completing an unlikely climb from 20-31 in May to a division title. Houston beat the Athletics 9-0 in West Sacramento and finished 81-81. Texas’s 6-4 loss to Minnesota secured the crown before the Astros’ game ended.
Houston and Texas entered the final day tied atop the division. The Astros had won nine of their 13 meetings with the Rangers, giving them the head-to-head tiebreaker if both clubs finished with the same record. The shutout made that calculation unnecessary: Houston finished one game ahead of Texas.
From six and a half games back to the AL West title
On May 21, the Astros were 20-31 and 6½ games out of first place. Injuries had gutted their roster; at one point, 16 players were on the injured list. The returns of Hunter Brown, Jeremy Peña and Josh Hader helped Houston recover, while Yordan Alvarez remained the lineup’s steady force. Alvarez finished the season with 42 home runs and a .316 batting average.
Rookie Lucas Spence delivered a two-run triple in a four-run third inning against the Athletics, helping Houston take control of its final regular-season game. The win gave the Astros their eighth AL West title in 10 seasons and sent them back to October after missing the postseason in 2025.
The 81-81 record also makes this a striking division championship: according to the Associated Press, Houston is the first MLB division winner to finish a full-length season without a winning record. The Astros now host the Chicago White Sox in a best-of-three AL Wild Card Series beginning Tuesday, September 29, at Daikin Park.
