William Contreras was named the 2026 World Series Most Valuable Player on Wednesday, October 28, after the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Tampa Bay Rays 4-1 in Game 5 to clinch the first championship in franchise history. The catcher hit .381 over the five-game series, but his influence extended well beyond the batter’s box.

Contreras finished 8-for-21 with four RBIs, including a sixth-inning double that brought home Christian Yelich in the clincher. He also helped take away one of Tampa Bay’s biggest weapons: its speed.

Contreras controlled the game behind the plate

The 28-year-old threw out four of nine Rays runners attempting to steal. Tampa Bay had gone 11-for-11 in stolen-base attempts earlier in the postseason, making that turnaround particularly significant.

He was equally sharp with the Automated Ball-Strike challenge system, winning 10 of 13 challenges in the World Series. In the first Fall Classic played with the system, those overturned calls gave Milwaukee an extra defensive edge. The Brewers’ pitchers held the Rays to a 1.91 ERA and a .182 batting average during the series.

Contreras was also a steady presence throughout Milwaukee’s October run, batting .444 in the Division Series against San Diego and .357 in the National League Championship Series against Los Angeles.

First catcher to win the award since 2015

Contreras became the eighth catcher to win or share World Series MVP honors and the first since Salvador Pérez did so for Kansas City in 2015. His selection came in a series filled with strong Milwaukee candidates: rookie Cooper Pratt collected eight hits and seven RBIs, while Jackson Chourio batted .458.

Manager Pat Murphy credited Contreras’ work with the pitching staff as central to the championship. The award capped an extraordinary year for the Venezuelan, who was also part of his country’s World Baseball Classic-winning team in March.

For Milwaukee, the MVP choice underlined a less visible part of its historic title: the catcher who helped its pitchers dictate the terms of the series.
