How the MVP Award is decided
The Most Valuable Player Award goes to one player in each league. Like the Cy Young, it is voted on by BBWAA writers at the end of the regular season, and the postseason does not count. Pitchers are eligible too, and two-way players are judged on both sides. The winners are announced in November.
What these leaderboards show
Hitters are ranked by OPS (on-base plus slugging) among those with at least 3.1 plate appearances per team game (502 this season), the official MLB qualification for the batting title. Voters also look at defense, position, baserunning and value metrics such as WAR, which are not part of these tables.
