Yordan Alvarez Reaches 40 Home Runs as Astros Retake AL West Lead
Yordan Alvarez hit his 40th home run as the Astros beat the Royals 6-2, moved one game ahead in the AL West and kept his Triple Crown push alive.

Yordan Alvarez reached 40 home runs for the first time in his career Thursday night, helping the Houston Astros beat the Kansas City Royals 6-2 and reclaim sole possession of first place in the American League West with nine games remaining.
Alvarez drove a Seth Lugo fastball 385 feet to right field in the fifth inning at Daikin Park, extending Houston’s lead to 4-1. The homer left his bat at 107.2 mph and made him just the fifth player in Astros history to produce a 40-homer season.
Astros power surge arrives at the right time
Houston entered the series finale tied with the Texas Rangers atop the AL West after a 5-2 loss Wednesday. The response was emphatic: the Astros hit a season-high five home runs, all solo shots, and finished with 11 hits.
Jeremy Peña opened the scoring with his 20th homer of the season in the first inning. Daulton Varsho followed in the second, while LaMonte Wade Jr. and Alvarez went deep in the fifth. Taylor Trammell added Houston’s fifth homer in the eighth.
The win moved the Astros to 77-76. Texas lost to Boston later Thursday, leaving Houston one game clear in the division race. The Astros also own the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Rangers, increasing the value of every game in the final stretch.
Alvarez joins a short list in Astros history
Alvarez is Houston’s first 40-homer hitter since Alex Bregman hit 41 in 2019. Jeff Bagwell, Lance Berkman and Richard Hidalgo are the only other Astros to reach the mark in a season.
The milestone also strengthens one of the American League’s biggest offensive seasons. Alvarez finished Thursday batting .311, tied for the AL batting lead, with 99 RBIs. His 40 home runs put him one behind the league leader.
Houston’s pitching staff made the power display stand up after a difficult opening inning. Miguel Ullola loaded the bases without recording an out, but the Royals managed only one run. Ethan Pecko then delivered 5 2/3 innings of one-run relief, allowing three hits as Houston took control.
AL West race enters its final nine games
The Astros now turn to a three-game home series against the Atlanta Braves before finishing the regular season on the road. With the division still unsettled, Alvarez reaching 40 was more than an individual milestone: it came in the kind of September win Houston needed to regain control of its postseason path.
