Teruaki Sato delivered the go-ahead hit for the second straight night and Kotaro Otake threw seven scoreless innings as the Hanshin Tigers beat the Hiroshima Toyo Carp 2-1 at Koshien Stadium on Friday, September 18, tightening their grip on the Central League pennant race.

The victory moved Hanshin to 71-57-1 and reduced its magic number to 12 with the regular season entering its final stretch. Sato, already in the middle of a career season, drove a fourth-inning single through the right side to break a scoreless tie.

Sato delivers another decisive hit

Hanshin opened the fourth against Hiroshima starter Masato Morishita with consecutive baserunners before Sato came to the plate with nobody out and runners at first and second. The Tigers cleanup hitter lined a 1-1 pitch into right field to score the game’s first run.

Yusuke Oyama followed immediately with another RBI single, giving Hanshin a 2-0 advantage. The two runs proved to be enough.

Sato’s hit gave him the winning RBI for a second consecutive game and his 19th game-winning RBI of the season. He entered Friday batting .315 with 35 home runs and 94 RBIs, keeping him at the center of both Hanshin’s pennant push and the Central League’s individual leaderboards.

Otake shuts down Hiroshima

Otake gave the Tigers exactly the kind of start they needed in a tight September race. The left-hander held Hiroshima to two hits across seven scoreless innings, striking out five and earning his sixth victory of the season.

Morishita kept the Carp within reach, allowing only four hits and two runs over seven innings while striking out eight, but Hiroshima’s offense could not generate enough against Otake.

The Carp finally broke through in the eighth. Shogo Akiyama’s groundout brought home a run and cut the deficit to 2-1, but Hanshin’s bullpen prevented the tying run from scoring. Taisei Kudo closed the ninth for his 10th save.

Hanshin keeps control of the Central League race

The win was Hanshin’s second in a row over Hiroshima after a 7-2 victory on Thursday and came at an important point in a close pennant race. The Tigers entered the series only narrowly ahead of the Yomiuri Giants and now have another result in hand as the schedule runs down.

Hanshin and Hiroshima meet again at Koshien on Saturday, giving the Tigers another opportunity to reduce the magic number and build separation at the top of the Central League.
