Toros de Tijuana Shut Out Olmecas to Take 2-1 Lead in 2026 Serie del Rey
David Reyes threw five scoreless innings as Toros de Tijuana shut out Olmecas de Tabasco 2-0 and took a 2-1 lead in the 2026 Serie del Rey.

David Reyes delivered five scoreless innings and the Toros de Tijuana bullpen finished the job as Tijuana defeated the Olmecas de Tabasco 2-0 on Friday night, taking a 2-1 lead in the 2026 Serie del Rey of the Liga Mexicana de Beisbol.
VILLAHERMOSA, Mexico — After the first two games of the 2026 Serie del Rey produced 23 combined runs, Game 3 became a completely different type of contest.
Pitching took over.
David Reyes and four Tijuana relievers combined to shut out the Olmecas de Tabasco, while Tomás Telis supplied the game’s first run and Justin Turner added late insurance as the Toros de Tijuana won 2-0 at Estadio Centenario 27 de Febrero.
The victory moved Tijuana ahead 2-1 in the best-of-seven championship series, putting the Toros two wins away from the third Liga Mexicana de Beisbol championship in franchise history.
David Reyes shuts down Olmecas in Game 3
Reyes entered Game 3 with a strong postseason résumé and produced exactly the type of outing Tijuana needed on the road.
The right-hander worked five scoreless innings, allowing four hits and one walk while striking out four. Tabasco put runners on base but never produced the decisive hit against him.
His performance continued an impressive postseason run. Reyes had been listed at 3-0 with a 1.69 ERA during the 2026 playoffs before taking the mound Friday.
Once Reyes departed, the Toros bullpen maintained the same pressure.
Tijuana’s relief corps completed four more scoreless innings before Brett de Geus recorded the save, preserving the first shutout of this year’s Serie del Rey.
The pitching performance was particularly significant considering what had happened only two nights earlier, when the two offenses combined for 15 runs in Game 2.
Tomás Telis delivers the run Tijuana needed
Tijuana did not need another offensive explosion.
One run was enough for most of the night.
Phillip Evans reached base in the second inning, and with two outs, Tomás Telis doubled to left field to bring Evans home and give the Toros a 1-0 advantage.
That lead remained unchanged through the eighth inning.
Tabasco starter Ronnie Williams did almost everything necessary to keep his team in the game. Williams completed six innings and surrendered only one run while recording nine strikeouts, but the Olmecas offense could not provide him with any support.
The contrast made Game 3 one of the purest pitching battles of the 2026 LMB postseason.
Justin Turner adds ninth-inning home run
Tijuana finally created some breathing room in the ninth.
Justin Turner hit a solo home run, extending the Toros’ advantage to 2-0 before the bullpen closed out the victory.
The home run proved unnecessary to the final result, but it changed the complexion of the bottom of the ninth by forcing Tabasco to chase two runs instead of one.
For Tijuana, it also represented another contribution from a lineup that had overwhelmed Olmecas pitching in Game 2.
The Toros have now found two very different ways to win consecutive games.
One was decided by overwhelming power.
The other was decided from the mound.
Serie del Rey swings after Tabasco wins Game 1
The championship series has already changed dramatically three times.
Tabasco struck first in the opener, winning 7-1 in Tijuana behind six dominant innings from Austin Warner. The Olmecas immediately took away Tijuana’s home-field advantage and entered Game 2 with an opportunity to travel home holding a 2-0 series lead.
Instead, the Toros responded with one of the biggest offensive innings of the postseason.
Tijuana won Game 2 13-2, scoring 10 times in the fifth inning. Franchy Cordero hit a grand slam, while Junior Lake, Jonathan Guzmán and Telis also homered. Tijuana finished the game with 18 hits.
That victory tied the series.
Game 3 then produced the opposite extreme: two runs, dominant starting pitching and a shutout.
Through three games, the Serie del Rey has produced a 7-1 Tabasco win, a 13-2 Tijuana win and a 2-0 Tijuana victory.
The Toros now have the first sustained advantage of the series.
Serie del Rey returns to Tabasco after 33 years
Game 3 carried additional significance beyond the result.
It was the first Serie del Rey game played in Tabasco in 33 years, bringing Mexico’s championship series back to Estadio Centenario 27 de Febrero for the first time since the Olmecas’ historic 1993 championship season.
The venue was filled for the occasion, with former members of the 1993 championship team involved in the pregame ceremony.
That history is central to Tabasco’s 2026 run.
The Olmecas had not appeared in the Serie del Rey since 1993, when they defeated the Tecolotes de los Dos Laredos in five games to capture the organization’s only LMB championship.
They have waited more than three decades for another opportunity.
Tijuana is trying to prevent the reunion from ending with another title celebration.
Toros chasing third LMB championship
The Toros have much more recent championship history.
Tijuana won its first Liga Mexicana de Beisbol championship in 2017, defeating the Pericos de Puebla. The Toros returned to the top in 2021, beating the Leones de Yucatán in seven games.
The 2026 appearance is their first Serie del Rey since that 2021 championship.
Tijuana entered the postseason after producing the best regular-season record in the North Zone at 60-31, a .659 winning percentage. The Toros finished nine wins clear of their nearest divisional challenger and carried that form into October-style elimination baseball.
They then eliminated the Sultanes de Monterrey to capture the North Zone championship and advance to the Serie del Rey.
A third title would place another championship alongside the 2017 and 2021 clubs.
After Friday’s victory, only two more wins are required.
Olmecas still have opportunity at home
Despite the 2-1 deficit, Tabasco remains in a favorable part of the championship schedule.
Games 4 and 5 are also being played in Villahermosa, giving the Olmecas two more opportunities to respond in front of their home crowd before the series would return to Tijuana if a sixth game is necessary.
The challenge is increasingly urgent.
A Tabasco victory in Game 4 would level the championship at 2-2 and effectively turn the Serie del Rey into a best-of-three.
A Tijuana victory would produce a much different situation: a 3-1 series advantage and three opportunities to win one game for the championship.
Before the series began, Noah Skirrow was announced as Tijuana’s Game 4 starter, with Daniel Camarena scheduled for Tabasco.
That makes Saturday’s matchup potentially the most important game of the series so far.
Tijuana shows it can win in different ways
Three games have already provided a useful picture of what may determine the 2026 LMB championship.
Tijuana’s offense demonstrated its ceiling in Game 2, when a 10-run inning and four home runs turned the game into a rout.
Game 3 showed that the Toros do not necessarily require that type of production.
Reyes controlled the first five innings. The bullpen protected a one-run lead. Telis produced the game’s key early hit, and Turner supplied insurance when Tijuana needed it.
The result was a victory built almost entirely on run prevention.
That versatility may ultimately become the defining factor of the series.
The Olmecas returned to their home stadium for a championship game for the first time in 33 years on Friday.
The Toros spoiled the occasion.
And after taking the first game played in Villahermosa, Tijuana is now two victories away from becoming the 2026 champion of the Liga Mexicana de Beisbol.
