Braves Clinch 2026 Playoff Berth as Three Two-Run Homers Sink Astros
The Atlanta Braves clinched a 2026 playoff berth with a 6-2 win over Houston as Michael Harris II, Ronald Acuña Jr. and Matt Olson all homered.

The Atlanta Braves are back in October. Atlanta clinched a 2026 postseason berth with a 6-2 win over the Houston Astros on Friday night at Daikin Park, powered by two-run home runs from Michael Harris II, Ronald Acuña Jr. and Matt Olson.
The victory moved Atlanta to 90-64 and guaranteed at least a National League wild-card spot. More importantly, the Braves remained firmly in control of the NL East, holding a five-game lead over the Philadelphia Phillies with eight games remaining.
Three swings send Atlanta back to October
Harris broke a scoreless game in the fourth inning, driving a Peter Lambert pitch the other way for his 26th home run of the season. Houston answered with one run in the bottom half, but the Braves never surrendered the lead.
Acuña created the separation in the seventh. With Atlanta protecting a 2-1 advantage, he launched a two-run homer for a 4-1 lead. The star right fielder then made another decisive contribution defensively in the eighth, making a diving catch on Jose Altuve’s shallow fly ball with two runners aboard to end Houston’s threat.
Olson supplied the final blow in the ninth, hitting his 40th home run of the season to make it 6-2. It is the second 40-homer season of his Braves career after his franchise-record 54 in 2023.
Tyler Mahle continues remarkable Atlanta run
The offense supplied three big swings, but Tyler Mahle again gave Atlanta the foundation it needed. The right-hander held Houston to one run on three hits over six innings while striking out six.
Mahle has posted a 1.28 ERA through eight starts since Atlanta acquired him from the San Francisco Giants on August 2. He entered the Braves rotation after recording a 5.13 ERA in 18 starts for San Francisco, turning what initially looked like a depth move into one of Atlanta’s most important deadline additions.
NL East title now within reach
Atlanta’s postseason return comes one year after a 76-86 season ended a run of seven consecutive playoff appearances. The Braves have now reached the postseason eight times in nine years, with the 2021 World Series championship standing as the high point of that stretch.
The job is not finished. Philadelphia’s loss to the New York Mets on Friday expanded Atlanta’s division lead to five games, putting the Braves in position to clinch the NL East as early as Sunday.
Houston, meanwhile, fell to 77-77 and into a tie with the Texas Rangers atop the AL West, adding another consequence to a night that officially returned Atlanta to the postseason.
