Markus Solbach delivered exactly the kind of performance the Bonn Capitals needed in Game 1 of the 2026 Deutsche Baseball Liga Final, throwing a complete game in a 4-1 win over Guggenberger Legionäre Regensburg and giving Bonn the first lead in the best-of-five championship series.

The veteran right-hander held Regensburg to four hits and one run across nine innings, striking out seven without issuing a walk. In a final expected to be decided by pitching, Solbach immediately set the standard.

Solbach wins a duel between two German national-team pitchers

Christian Pedrol matched Solbach for most of the afternoon. Regensburg’s starter also went the distance, allowing only five hits over eight innings and striking out eight. But the difference was control.

Pedrol walked five batters, while Solbach did not put a single hitter on base via a free pass. That gap mattered immediately. Two walks in the first inning, followed by an intentional walk to Simon Bäumer, loaded the bases for Bonn. Daniel Lamb-Hunt then lifted a sacrifice fly that brought Eric Brenk home for a 1-0 lead.

After that, both pitchers settled into the kind of rhythm that made the game feel much tighter than the final score suggests. Regensburg managed only two hits through the middle innings, while Pedrol kept Bonn’s lineup quiet until Brenk doubled in the sixth.

Bonn finds just enough offense

Brenk’s sixth-inning double became the first hit Pedrol allowed. A groundout moved him to third, and McCoy Pearce followed with an RBI single to make it 2-0.

The decisive swing came two innings later. Pearce doubled in the eighth before Bäumer, who played for Regensburg before moving to Bonn, launched a two-run home run. The blast pushed the Capitals’ lead to 4-0 and gave Solbach a cushion that proved more than enough.

It was a fitting moment in a final between two clubs that know each other well. Bonn and Regensburg split their four Interleague meetings during the 2026 season, and this championship matchup is the first time the two long-standing Bundesliga clubs have met in a German championship final.

Regensburg finally breaks through in the ninth

The Legionäre did not go quietly. In the ninth inning, Nino Sacasa reached on a fielder’s choice and Devon Ramirez drove him home with a double, finally ending Solbach’s shutout bid.

That was as far as the comeback went. Daniel Patrice lined out to left fielder Noah Lorenz to end the game, leaving Bonn with a 1-0 series advantage and Regensburg with work to do.

The result also reinforced the biggest storyline entering the series: Bonn’s pitching depth may be the Capitals’ clearest path to the title. Solbach was dominant in the semifinal round and carried that form straight into the championship opener.

Rain changes the shape of the series

Game 2 was supposed to be played the following day in Bonn, but heavy rain made the field unplayable and forced the game to be cancelled. The series will now continue in Regensburg, with Games 2 and 3 scheduled for September 19 and 20.

That makes Bonn’s opening win even more valuable. Instead of needing to defend home field twice before travelling south, the Capitals head to the Armin-Wolf-Arena already holding the series lead.

For Regensburg, the task is clear: find a way to generate more offense against Bonn’s elite pitching staff and make better use of its opportunities. For Bonn, Game 1 showed that one dominant starter and one late swing may be enough to tilt a championship game.
