Everything on the Line in Paderborn and Hamburg in the 2026 Deutsche Baseball Liga Playoffs
Preview the 2026 Deutsche Baseball Liga playoff semifinals as Bonn, Paderborn, Regensburg and Hamburg battle for a place in the German final.

The 2026 Deutsche Baseball Liga playoffs enter their decisive semifinal weekend with almost nothing separating the final four teams. After the opening two games of both best-of-five series, the Bonn Capitals and Untouchables Paderborn are tied 1-1, while the Guggenberger Legionäre Regensburg and Hamburg Stealers are also locked at 1-1.
That means Germany could know both participants in the 2026 championship series by Sunday evening.
The semifinal action moves from Bonn to Paderborn and from Regensburg to Hamburg on September 5 and 6. Game 3 is guaranteed in both series, while Games 4 and, if required, 5 will follow on Sunday. Under the DBL playoff format, three victories are required to advance to the German championship series, which is scheduled to begin on September 12.

*If necessary. Games in Paderborn are scheduled for Ahorn-Ballpark, while the Hamburg series continues at Baseballfeld Langenhorst. Although Bonn and Regensburg are officially designated as the home teams in a potential Game 5, those games would still be played at the second-weekend venue. DBL rules give the higher seed home-team status in Games 1, 2 and 5.
Bonn Capitals vs. Untouchables Paderborn: favorite meets fearless challenger
On paper, Bonn entered this semifinal with the stronger résumé.
The Capitals finished the 2026 regular season atop the DBL North with a 17-3 record, four games ahead of second-place Paderborn at 13-7. Bonn then won the Interleague phase and entered the postseason as one of the championship favorites. Before the semifinal began, the Capitals had also won all four of their 2026 meetings with Paderborn.
None of that prevented the Untouchables from striking first.
Paderborn took Game 1 in Bonn 8-3, immediately removing the Capitals’ home-field advantage from the equation. The outstanding performance came from Mark Harrison, who threw a complete game, allowing six hits and one walk while striking out eight over 123 pitches. Offensively, Jann-Mika Schierhorn and Jules Moser helped Paderborn overturn Bonn’s early lead.
For a Paderborn team already accustomed to playoff adversity, it was another major road victory.
Bonn’s offense responds with 12 runs
The Capitals responded emphatically the following afternoon.
Paderborn led 1-0 and later 5-3, but Bonn repeatedly answered. The Capitals scored three times in the fourth, three in the fifth and four in the sixth on their way to a 12-5 victory.
Terrell Joyce delivered a two-run double in the fourth inning. McCoy Pearce became increasingly influential as the game developed, driving in a run in the fifth before adding another two-run double in the sixth. Danny Lankhorst and Daniel Lamb-Hunt supplied RBI singles, while Simon Bäumer delivered one of the biggest swings of the game with a two-run home run.
The result restored order for Bonn, but only partially. Instead of carrying a commanding advantage to Paderborn, the Capitals now effectively face a best-of-three series on their opponent’s field.
Paderborn has already proved it can survive elimination baseball
Few teams in Germany enter this weekend with more recent experience of high-pressure baseball than the Untouchables.
Paderborn’s quarterfinal against defending champion Heidenheim Heideköpfe appeared almost over after the U’s lost the opening two games. Instead, Paderborn won three consecutive elimination games.
After a 4-3 Game 3 victory, the Untouchables shut out Heidenheim 2-0 in Game 4 before completing an extraordinary comeback with a 12-10 victory in Game 5. They even recovered from an early 8-2 deficit in the deciding contest.
That series transformed Paderborn from a dangerous underdog into a genuine title threat.
The young Untouchables lineup has repeatedly demonstrated its ability to respond after falling behind. That trait will matter against a Bonn team that has been one of Germany’s most consistent clubs throughout 2026.
Key question: can Paderborn contain Bonn’s middle innings?
The first weekend showed two very different versions of the series.
When Harrison controlled the game from the mound, Bonn managed only three runs. One day later, once the Capitals established traffic on the bases, Paderborn struggled to stop innings from expanding.
Bonn scored 12 runs between the two games, while Paderborn scored 13.
The aggregate score is almost identical. The manner in which those runs were scored suggests pitching depth and bullpen management could become increasingly important if the series reaches a Sunday doubleheader.
Game 3 on Saturday therefore carries enormous weight. The winner will move within one victory of the German championship series and force the opponent to win twice on Sunday.
Hamburg Stealers vs. Guggenberger Legionäre: another 1-1 showdown
The second semifinal follows an almost identical script.
Regensburg entered the series as the higher seed and had produced an excellent regular season, finishing 15-5 in the DBL South. Hamburg went 12-8 in the North before becoming one of the strongest teams during the Interleague phase. The clubs split their Interleague meetings, providing an early indication that very little separated them.
Their postseason routes were different but equally impressive.
Regensburg swept the Cologne Cardinals in the quarterfinals, completing the series with a dominant 14-0 victory. Hamburg also completed a three-game sweep, although its clinching victory over the Mainz Athletics required extra innings before the Stealers prevailed 3-2.
The semifinal has now produced one victory for each team.
Hamburg’s Game 1 victory changes the series
The Stealers made the first move with a 4-1 road victory in Regensburg.
Regensburg scored first in the third inning when Norwin Staps crossed the plate, but Hamburg responded in the middle innings. Runs involving Michael Flaherty and Darrion Richards moved the Stealers in front before two insurance runs in the ninth effectively finished the contest.
The significance of that victory should not be underestimated.
Hamburg did not simply steal a road game. The Stealers ensured that the series would return to northern Germany level at worst, giving themselves the opportunity to clinch a place in the final in front of their home crowd.
But Regensburg answered immediately.
Daniel Patrice and Alexander Schmidt spark Regensburg comeback
Game 2 appeared to be moving in Hamburg’s direction as well.
The Stealers scored in the second inning and added another run in the fourth to establish a 2-0 lead. At that point, Hamburg was threatening to leave Regensburg with a 2-0 series advantage.
Then the Legionäre offense finally broke through.
Daniel Patrice tied the game with a two-run double in the bottom of the fourth. One inning later, Alexander Schmidt hit a solo home run to give Regensburg its first lead of the game. The Legionäre added another insurance run in the seventh and closed out a 4-2 victory.
It may prove to be one of the most important rallies of their season.
Instead of traveling to Hamburg needing three straight wins, Regensburg arrives with the series tied.
Hamburg’s home field could become decisive
The venue now changes to Baseballfeld Langenhorst.
Hamburg has already demonstrated that it can beat Regensburg away from home, while the Legionäre have shown that they can respond after falling behind. The teams’ Interleague meetings were split, and the opening semifinal weekend produced another split.
There is little evidence of a significant competitive gap between them.
Hamburg does carry one important advantage into the weekend: Games 3 and 4 will be played on its home field.
A potential Game 5 would also remain in Hamburg, although Regensburg would receive official home-team status because of its superior playoff seeding.
That unusual format makes Saturday’s Game 3 particularly important. If Hamburg wins, the Stealers would have two opportunities on Sunday to finish the series at Langenhorst. If Regensburg wins, the Legionäre would need only one victory from a potential two-game Sunday schedule.
Four teams, two places in the German championship series
The balance of the 2026 DBL semifinals is striking.
Bonn had the best regular-season record among the remaining northern clubs. Regensburg was one of the strongest teams in the South. Yet both higher-seeded sides lost their opening semifinal games.
Paderborn eliminated the defending champions after trailing its quarterfinal 0-2. Hamburg swept Mainz and then immediately won in Regensburg. Neither lower-seeded club looks intimidated by playing against an established championship contender.
The result is effectively two best-of-three series beginning from zero this weekend.
Semifinal status entering September 5
| Series | Score | Next venue |
|---|---|---|
| Bonn Capitals vs. Untouchables Paderborn | 1-1 | Paderborn |
| Guggenberger Legionäre vs. Hamburg Stealers | 1-1 | Hamburg |
The DBL’s new 2026 competition structure has delivered exactly what the postseason format was designed to create. Eight teams entered the playoffs on August 15, and the field is now down to four. The semifinal winners advance to a best-of-five championship series beginning September 12, with the title of Deutscher Meister Baseball 2026 at stake.
What to watch in the 2026 DBL playoff semifinals
The biggest storyline in Paderborn will be whether the Untouchables can reproduce the pitching performance that won Game 1 or whether Bonn’s deep offense can again create the multi-run innings that decided Game 2. The Capitals remain formidable, but Paderborn has now beaten both defending champion Heidenheim and Bonn during an impressive postseason run.
In Hamburg, the matchup may be even harder to predict. The first two games were decided by a combined five runs, and both clubs have already shown they can win when trailing. Regensburg’s response in Game 2 kept its championship ambitions firmly alive, but the Stealers now have the opportunity to decide the series on their own field.
By Sunday night, the 2026 Deutsche Baseball Liga championship matchup could be set.
With both semifinals tied 1-1, there is no clear margin for error. One strong starting pitching performance, one defensive mistake or one decisive late-inning hit could determine who will play for the German baseball championship.
