The 2026 Deutsche Baseball Liga season has reached its championship series, and German baseball is getting a final it has never seen before. The Bonn Capitals and Guggenberger Legionäre Regensburg will meet for the German championship after finishing first and second in the DBL Interleague standings.

BONN, Germany — More than three decades after arriving in Germany’s highest baseball division together, the Bonn Capitals and Guggenberger Legionäre Regensburg are finally meeting with the national championship directly on the line.

The 2026 DBL Final begins in Bonn this weekend, with the two long-established clubs facing each other in a best-of-five series. Games 1 and 2 are scheduled at the Capitals’ home ground on September 12 and 13 before the championship moves to Regensburg.

It is a matchup built on history, but also one that makes sense based on the 2026 season.

Bonn finished first in the Interleague round at 15-5, while Regensburg followed at 12-8. Their four meetings against each other produced a perfect 2-2 split.

Now one of German baseball’s longest-running rivalries will produce a champion.

Bonn and Regensburg meet in DBL Final for first time

The history between the two clubs stretches back to 1994, when both Bonn and Regensburg were promoted to Germany’s highest division.

Their paths have crossed repeatedly since then, including several postseason series, but never previously in the championship final.

One of their most memorable encounters came in the 2018 semifinals, when Bonn defeated Regensburg 3-2 in Game 4 after 19 innings and approximately five and a half hours. According to the DBL, it remains the longest playoff game in German baseball history.

Thirty-two seasons after their shared arrival at the top level, they finally meet for the title.

The two organizations have combined for eight German championships.

Bonn is pursuing its fourth title after winning in 2018, 2022 and 2024. The Capitals are making their ninth championship-series appearance and their eighth in the past ten seasons.

Regensburg is seeking a sixth German championship. The Legionäre won their first title in 2008 before capturing four consecutive championships from 2010 through 2013. This is their 11th appearance in the final and their second in succession.

Capitals entered playoffs as DBL’s top Interleague team

Bonn has been one of the most consistent teams in Germany throughout 2026.

The Capitals finished the initial North regular season with a 17-3 record, an .850 winning percentage. They continued that form after the league moved into its new Interleague phase, finishing 15-5 and three games ahead of Regensburg.

Their route through the postseason initially appeared straightforward.

Bonn swept the Stuttgart Reds 3-0 in the quarterfinals, but the Untouchables Paderborn pushed the Capitals considerably harder in the semifinal.

Paderborn moved ahead 2-1 in the best-of-five series, leaving Bonn one defeat from elimination. The Capitals responded emphatically.

They won Game 4 10-3 before shutting out Paderborn 8-0 in the deciding fifth game on the same day to complete the comeback and secure their place in the championship series.

That response may prove important in a final expected to feature much smaller margins.

Regensburg recovered from semifinal opening defeat

Regensburg’s playoff route followed a different pattern.

The Legionäre swept the Cologne Cardinals 3-0 in their quarterfinal before losing the opening game of the semifinals against the Hamburg Stealers.

They then recovered to win the series 3-1.

The decisive weekend in Hamburg demonstrated Regensburg’s ability to win close games late. In Game 3, the Legionäre entered the ninth inning trailing 3-2 before Nino Sacasa Petz tied the game with an RBI single and Daniel Patrice followed with a two-run single to complete a 5-3 comeback victory.

Regensburg then won Game 4 7-4, with a three-run sixth inning helping create the separation needed to close the series.

Patrice enters the final in particularly strong form. He was voted the DBL’s Batter of the Week following the semifinal round, while Bonn pitcher Titus von Kapff received the corresponding pitching honor.

Bonn and Regensburg split all four meetings in 2026

There may be no better indicator of how close this final could be than the regular-season meetings between the two clubs.

They played four times during the Interleague phase.

Bonn won the first meeting 2-1, before Regensburg responded with an 11-4 victory. When the teams met again in Regensburg, the Capitals won 4-1.

The fourth game was the most dramatic.

Bonn took a lead into extra innings, but Regensburg rallied and Daniel Patrice eventually delivered the walk-off hit in a 7-6 Legionäre victory.

The season series therefore finished 2-2.

That balance extends beyond wins and losses.

Bonn appears to hold an advantage in rotation depth, while Regensburg brings an offense without many obvious weak points.

Bonn pitching could decide the DBL championship

The Capitals’ biggest strength is their starting pitching.

Their potential rotation includes Niklas Rimmel, Markus Solbach and Titus von Kapff, giving Bonn three established options for a series in which pitching depth becomes increasingly important with every game.

Von Kapff has been particularly effective during the postseason. DBL statistics list him among the playoff ERA leaders at 2.19 entering the final.

The bullpen also contains significant experience in Noah Lindt and Dovydas Neverauskas.

Neverauskas brings an unusual level of international experience to the German championship stage, while Lindt adds another high-level arm capable of protecting late leads.

Offensively, the Capitals can turn to German national-team players Eric Brenk, Maurice Bendrien and Simon Bäumer, while McCoy Pearce provides another major threat.

Pearce hit .394 during the North regular-season phase, the highest average listed in that group, while Bäumer hit .378.

Regensburg lineup built around depth

Regensburg presents a different challenge.

Rather than relying on one dominant offensive centerpiece, the Legionäre have received production throughout the batting order.

Kohei Sasagawa was particularly productive during the South regular-season phase, batting .404, while German international Alexander Schmidt hit .352. Nino Sacasa has also been one of the important bats during the championship phase and hit .375 during Interleague play.

The Legionäre pitching staff is led by starters Christian Pedrol and Leeroy Tavarez, with French relievers Quentin Moulin and Nico Antoine available behind them.

Moulin enters the championship series with a 2.08 playoff ERA, according to the DBL’s postseason leaderboard.

That combination of balanced offense and bullpen depth has already helped Regensburg survive several tight postseason situations.

It may need to do so again against Bonn.

2026 DBL Final schedule

The opening two games of the best-of-five series are being staged in Bonn, where the Capitals earned home-field advantage through their first-place Interleague finish.

Game 1: September 12 — Bonn
Game 2: September 13 — Bonn
Game 3: Regensburg
Game 4: Regensburg, if necessary
Game 5: September 26 — Bonn, if necessary

The first two games are scheduled for 14:00 local time, with a potential deciding fifth game returning to Bonn.

A new chapter in one of German baseball’s longest rivalries

There is no unfamiliarity between these teams.

Bonn and Regensburg have shared Germany’s top division since 1994. They have played memorable postseason games, built championship teams and established themselves among the country’s most recognizable baseball organizations.

Yet there is something genuinely new about the 2026 final.

For the first time, every pitch between the Capitals and Legionäre will directly determine which of them becomes German champion.

Bonn enters with home-field advantage, the better Interleague record and arguably the deeper starting rotation.

Regensburg has already shown its ability to win close games, come from behind late and produce offense throughout the lineup.

Their four games this season produced two victories each.

After 32 years together at the highest level, the next three wins matter more than all the others.
